Frequently Asked Questions
Prospective Students
- How does the MPC connect with my individual career goals?
Weber State’s MPC program works hard to ensure every student can adapt the program offerings to fit their goals best. At the core of the program, students have the flexibility within core classes to pick courses that most closely match their career goals. For electives, students draw from interesting special topics classes or supplement their communication degree with courses in other graduate programs on the Weber State campus that further their career goals. Students then choose a culminating experience—an academic master’s thesis, an applied professional project or a combination of additional elective classes—to finish in the way that accomplishes their goals.
Suppose you have a particular career track in mind. In that case, we encourage you to consult with your MPC adviser to choose the elective classes, research projects, hands-on applications, and thesis/final project ideas most beneficial to achieving your goals. We also encourage you to network with professional mentors for further direction.
- How long will it take me to complete the MPC degree?
Master of Professional Communication (MPC) students must receive approval from the program director to register for more than nine credit hours in a semester.
MPC students have a maximum of six calendar years to complete their degree requirements, starting from the first semester they have registered and begun taking classes. Students who exceed this requirement may submit a letter of appeal to the MPC director to waive this requirement. Students who fail to enroll in MPC courses for three consecutive semesters must apply for readmission to the program unless the program director approves a deferment. Students must consult with an MPC advisor every Fall Semester to ensure timely progress through the program. Students on the thesis/project track who, for any reason, do not finish their thesis or project or program of courses within the two-year framework suggested in this program must pay continuing enrollment and tuition the semester they defend their thesis or project.
- How much does the MPC program cost?
The current tuition and fees for the two-year MPC program are under $17,000. The tuition and fees table lists costs by the number of credit hours taken in a semester and includes links for payment plans and loan applications.
- What do MPC graduates do with their degrees?
Our graduates work in public relations, marketing communications, training and development, internal or organizational communication, social media and web communications, journalism and human resources. Multiple MPC graduates have even been elected to public office or started businesses after graduation.
- Which fields of employment are hiring MPC grads?
Every organization in every industry needs effective communicators. Numerous employer studies, such as the American Association of Colleges and Universities, show that professional communication skills are in demand. Many recent studies rank communication as the number one skill employers seek. Surveys show that all employers are looking for basic skills, including:
- communicating visually and digitally
- critical thinking
- relational (interpersonal, group/team)
- writing and speaking

- Can I take classes from other Master's programs?
You may take two elective courses from other Weber State graduate programs, provided you have met all requirements. - How many classes should I take each semester?
Our program keeps the schedules of working professionals in mind. Many of our students choose to take six credits/semester (one class in the first block and one class in the second block). We are making adequate progress in our program. At that pace, students will graduate in less than two calendar years! However, students may take up to nine credits/semester (the Weber State definition of full-time graduate studies). If students wish to take more than nine credits/semester (i.e., more than full-time status), students must petition for an extension of their credit hours limit on a semester-by-semester basis.
- How many credit hours can I take a semester?
Students may only take more than nine credit hours per semester with permission from the program director and the registration office. Nine credit hours are considered full-time for graduate students.
- Is financial aid available to graduate students?
The process to apply for financial aid is the same for graduate students as for undergraduates. Please visit the Graduate Studies website for more information.
- What are the grade requirements for earning a MPC degree?
To earn the Master of Professional Communication degree, candidates must complete all Communication courses with a B- or higher grade and have an overall program GPA of 3.0 or higher. Failure to maintain a 3.0 grade point average or two consecutive course sessions resulting in a grade lower than C will result in academic probation per departmental policies.
