NEW GO Composites – Weber State Internship Duties and Objectives (Interested candidates please email Sara Seefried @ saraseefried@weber.edu)
EAST Majors
There are three potential projects for which GO Composites would require the help of student
interns from the Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering and
Chemistry Departments of Weber State University. These projects, with their respective
objectives are as follows:
Towpreg Manufacturing (TM): Carbon fiber (tow) is used in a variety of aerospace a
defense applications. GO Composites manufactures towpreg which is carbon fib
impregnated with a resin that can be hardened making a product that is very light weight and
strong. Intern Duties: Learn the process and manufacture towpreg in quantities that meet
customer needs.
Hydro-Burst Testing (HBT): To test the strength of carbon fiber and its resins, bottles a
made of towpreg and are pressurized with water until they burst. Fragments of these bottles
are then further analyzed to measure the properties of the resins. This testing is highly
controlled and safety measures are in place. Intern Duties: Help to develop and optimize the
Hydro-Burst testing equipment and laboratory and support for specific burst testin
Mandrel Manufacturing (MM): Containers, missile/rocket motor casings are made by
building 3 dimensional structures (mandrels) on a shaft which are wound with carbon fiber a
resin strands. GO Composites is pioneering the use of a material that will make mandrel
development faster and easier to work with. Intern Duties: Help to develop and optimize the
manufacture of mandrels for clients in the aerospace and defense industries.
