Why choose Interior Design Technology at WSU?

  • The practice of interior design has become complex, technical and demanding, so you need technical design skills and sales skills to compete.
  • WSU students compete and are very successful in national interior design awareness competitions such as the Student Career Forum Rug Competition, International Interior Design Association Edible Chair Competition and the National Kitchen & Bath Student Competition, as well as in portfolio reviews.
  • The program is endorsed by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA).
  • In addition to classroom projects, you will attend field trips and participate in community projects and professional organizations.

What are the employment opportunities?

The AAS degree provides academic preparation for employment as assistant designers, specifically in kitchen and bath, wholesale showrooms and retail sales positions. You will be prepared to sit for the Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) exam.

The bachelor’s degree program prepares you for employment in residential and commercial design and architecture firms. You may specialize in kitchen and bath, residential, hospitality, health and medical, corporate space or retail design, or work as a product representative for finishes, furnishing and equipment companies.

Starting Salary
Starting salaries vary depending on the region, workplace and skill level. Graduates can expect to start at $24,000-$32,000 per year. For more information, go to Career Services.

   

What will I learn in the program?

You will learn to enhance the quality and function of interior spaces, to improve your client's quality of life and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public you serve. You will study design theory and application; the history of art, architecture and furniture; construction and presentation drawings; the design process; business practices and space planning. You will develop problem-solving approaches to design. Practical experience through internships and cooperative work placements will enhance your classroom learning.

You will develop skills in sales, business practices, CAD, drafting, sketching, rendering, space planning and specification of materials.
