“This is a great way for our alumni in the community to get involved and support student scholarships,” said WSU Executive Director of Alumni Relations Nancy Collinwood. “The students who receive these scholarships are their neighbors, their student employees and their friends.”
The tournament began in 2001. In the last five years, enough funds have been collected to award 96 scholarships. This year’s tournament raised $43,628, the majority of which goes to student scholarships. The WSUAA Board of Director’s Student Relations Committee awards scholarships on an annual basis.
Chuck Ulrich, a certified public accountant and WSU graduate, provided the highlight of this year’s tournament. On the par-3 10th hole, Ulrich hit a hole-in-one to win a Chevy Cruze courtesy of John Watson Chevrolet. It was the first hole-in-one in the tournament’s history.
One of the students to receive a scholarship last year was WSU freshman Kellie Wittig. She is an athletic training major from Las Vegas.
“I have always wanted to attend Weber State University,” she said. “Weber had the academic program and the collegiate atmosphere that I wanted. I didn't know how I was going to pay for college. My family wasn't able to help me financially. Receiving this scholarship was the only way that I could attend. I have developed a deep pride for WSU, as I have become an overall better person since attending.”
Wittig said that the tournament has blessed her life, allowing her to go to college, make new friends and learn her potential.
“Getting involved has allowed me to meet other students with similar goals, and I have created friendships that will last a lifetime,” Wittig said. “WSU has helped me realize that I am capable of anything I put my mind to. Thanks to this WSUAA scholarship, I am well on my way to becoming a certified athletic trainer and a forever Wildcat.”
