New Weber State disc golf course up and running along Skyline Drive
OGDEN, Utah — Disc golf is back at Weber State University.
Open to the public, the new nine-hole course is located south of the substation off Skyline Drive above the Ogden campus, near the trailhead for the WSU Discovery Loop. A bike trail also intersects the course, which spans several thousand feet. Weber State received a grant from Weber County RAMP to fund construction of the course.
“It’s a beautiful little spot,” said Jacob Serio, a WSU preventive maintenance technician. “It’s a great opportunity to have this on campus again for faculty, staff and students.”
Serio was the driving force behind the original campus disc golf course, which opened around 2017 east of the Dee Events Center near Harrison Boulevard. With the construction of UTA’s Bus Rapid Transit route and other development in the area, Serio realized it was time to relocate the course on campus.
Work on the new course began around 2021, with Serio doing the bulk of the work, clearing out brush and finding spots to install the tee pads and baskets. “This course felt like I actually had to create it,” he said. “It was quite the process.”
The course has been open for a few weeks and has attracted a steady stream of regular players. The new course is more wooded than the old, which has led to some lost discs, so Serio plans to clear out more underbrush and prune branches around baskets as part of course upkeep.
“It’s a good course for beginners to start to learn, as well as for people with more experience who want more of a challenge,” he said. “It hits between them pretty good.”
