WSU Honors Graduates at 158th Commencement
OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University officials expect the class of 2021-22 to total 6,772 graduates. So far, 3,293 candidates have applied for spring 2022 graduation and will be honored at the 158th commencement ceremonies on April 29, beginning at 8 a.m. in the Dee Events Center. Others received their diplomas during commencement ceremonies held in December.
“Weber State’s tradition of preparing graduates equipped for success in their careers, additional academic pursuits, and in civic engagement continues strong with the Class of 2022, said President Brad Mortensen. “These graduates of all backgrounds persisted and achieved with the support of family, friends, faculty and staff. We celebrate their success, which will carry them into the next chapter.”
The class of 2021-22 is the largest on record. All those who received their diplomas in summer 2021, fall 2021 and spring 2022 are included in the total number of graduates.
This year’s commencement speaker is Fred Lampropoulos, CEO of Merit Medical Systems. Lampropoulos has been in the medical device industry for more than 30 years. He invented and owns more than 200 patents on devices used for diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of cardiac, peripheral, gastrointestinal and pulmonary conditions. Lampropoulos is also the recipient of numerous awards, a former Special Forces Officer and Honorary Colonel in the Utah National Guard. To learn more about Lampropoulos, visit this link.
This year’s student speaker, Kaila Lemons, is an environmental science major who was recognized by the Intermountain Sustainability Summit as the Undergraduate Sustainability Research winner. Following graduation, Lemons would like to start a youth sustainable leadership program.
The 2022 Brady Presidential Distinguished Professors also will be recognized at the ceremony. This year’s recipients are Michael Hernandez, earth and environmental sciences professor and Valerie Herzog, department chair of athletic training.
Each of the university’s seven colleges will hold individual commencement ceremonies for their graduates and will have different speakers during the programs. All ceremonies will be held in person with an option to watch online.
The ceremonies will be held at various times throughout the day primarily at the Val A. Browning Center and the Dee Events Center.
Tickets are not required; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and parking at all ceremonies is free.
All graduates attending college commencement ceremonies will receive pewter die-cast medallions with the presidential seal in honor of their achievements and hard work.
On April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m, graduates are invited to a luncheon in the Shepherd Union Building Atrium. Each graduate will receive three complimentary tickets (one for the graduate, two for guests) to the luncheon at the time they pick up their caps and gowns at Grad Finale, which will be held on April 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
If graduates are unable to pick up the complimentary tickets on April 12, they may get them at the Union Building Information Desk from April 13-26. Additional lunch tickets may be purchased at Grad Finale or at the Union Building Information Desk for $11 each. All guests must show a ticket in order to be admitted to the luncheon.
Masks are not required at the ceremonies, but are recommended for unvaccinated and high-risk attendees.
