John Hughes

Originally from New York and then California, John Hughes now makes his home in Salt Lake City where he has lived since 1991. He is a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of Utah and teaches courses at the Salt Lake Community College. He has won numerous awards including Artist of the Year, Big Bear, California; 1st place, "Best and Brightest of Show," Scottsdale Artists School; and "The Gallery Award of Excellence," Park City Gallery Association. He has been a featured artist in several national shows. His work can be seen at Astoria Gallery, Jackson Hole; Montgomery/Lee Gallery, Park City; Apple Frame Gallery, Bountiful, Utah; and Two Sisters Fine Art Gallery, Midway, Utah. In painting, the literal gives meaning to the abstract, but the abstract gives beauty to the literal; combined, the two transcend what could not be accomplished alone. The landscape has always held a particular fascination for me, but I paint and consider all subjects worthy of my artistic attention. Capturing the effect of light in a painting does more to convey a sense of reality than all the detail an artist can heap on a canvas. I think it is more effective to say a lot with less than to diminish a work with more. —John Hughes

Doug Braithwaite

Doug Braithwaite works from outside his studio in Sunset, Utah, where he teaches classes in plein air painting. He earned his BFA in painting from the University of Utah. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the New Mexico Plein Air Merit Award and First Place Purchase Award at Everett Ruess Plein Air Painting Competition, Escalante, Utah. His numerous shows and exhibitions include Terzian Gallery, Park City; The Torrey Gallery, Torrey, Utah; Rogoway Gallery, Tubac, Arizona; and Wilkerson Fine Art Gallery, Huntsville, Utah. Http://www.dougbraithwaite.com.

 

I enjoy the outdoors—plein air painting is a lot about surviving the elements. Feeling the heat or cold, the wind; all somehow become translated into the paintings. I also work in the studio, but all my work is based on time I have spent outside. I find it very interesting to try to understand what it is about a place that causes me to stop and paint. For the most part, I stop because I like what I am looking at, or there is a certain color that jumps out at me. I also believe that there is a certain geometry and/or rhythm that may be some of the underlying influences. —Doug Braithwaite

David Koch

David Koch earned a BA in Art from Utah State University. After successfully initiating his own graphic design business, he devoted his full efforts to the painting that is now his passion. He has won numerous awards and is currently represented by the Apple Frame Gallery, Bountiful, Utah; the Kneeland Gallery, Sun Valley, Idaho; Williams Fine Art Gallery, Salt Lake City; and The Mission Gallery, St. George, Utah. In addition, he has done a number of commissioned work, including the House of Representative murals for the Utah State Capitol Building. I enjoy painting various subjects, including figures, still lifes and landscapes. I try to capture the intimate aspects in my paintings and make the painting say more than just the objects being painted. I never cease to be amazed at how a few well-placed brush strokes can say so much. —David Koch

Roberta Glidden

Roberta Glidden studied art in the ‘60s at the University of Colorado where she earned a BA in English literature. Later she studied design, color, and art history at Weber State University. She developed a successful wholesale business producing hand-painted silk scarves. Roberta has garnered acclaim for her unique silk paintings and as an illustrator for children’s books. She was a founding member of Utah Designer Craft Gallery and Local Colors Artworks in Salt Lake City. She has exhibited her work nationally, and most recently her plein air paintings were featured at Gallery at the Station, Ogden, Utah. I may select a subject because of a certain reflection in a pond which in turn is having a conversation of light with some passing clouds. I have to grab the image fast because it will be gone—or radically changed—in fifteen minutes. This is the urgency and joy of plein air painting. —Roberta Glidden
