People in the United States are citizens of many levels of government and a republic depends on its citizens understanding what they do. In spring 2021, we heard from planning commissioners, county commissioners, high-level governor’s office staff, senior congressional staff, and lobbyists among others. In this course, people will learn from practitioners so they get republic in the real world.
Elections:
Every two years, the United States engages in national elections, either presidential, congressional, or both. These elections have happened every two years since 1788 and is the moment in time when the entire country focuses in on what our vision of the future should be. In fall 2020, we learned from geographers about redistricting, historians about suffrage, and political scientists about policy among others. In this course, people will learn from scholars and practitioners about American elections.
Political Leadership Institute:
Every two years, Utah engages in caucus building, which is the beginning for all political leadership. In past years, students learned from party chairs, campaign managers, and candidates, among others. In this course, people will learn how to become caucus delegates at the lowest level to how to run for office at the highest level.
Public Service:
Day in and day out, public servants are making this country work. From the departments of health that made sure people could get vaccinated to the police departments that keep our communities safe, students will learn from the people in the agencies that ensure our lives are possible.
