Course Sequence & Descriptions

• Summer 1 (June to August block)

  Educ 6250 Second Language Acquisition: Theories and Implementation (3cr)

  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the multi-faceted discipline of second language acquisition, learning, and teaching as it pertains to the multicultural classroom. The course stresses an understanding of the fundamentals that are an integral and consistent part of the professional life of all second language practitioners.

  MENG 6410 Strategies and Methodology of Teaching ESL (3cr)

  Teachers of English language learners will know, understand, and use evidence-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing standards-based ESL and content instruction and become knowledgeable about program models. They will integrate technology as well as choose and adapt classroom resources appropriate for their ELLs.

• Fall

  Educ 6270 Literacy Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners (3cr)

  This course will examine the various ways that literacy strategies for English Language Learners can be accomplished. Students will become aware that EL learning in all the language areas, reading, writing, listening, and speaking need to be scaffolded and the strategies learned in this course can be applied to the different modalities. The course will also examine the role of culture in the development of literacy among ELLs.

  MENG 6420 English Syntax & Phonology for ESL Teachers (3cr)

  In this course, you will study and practice important TESOL and applied linguistics recommendations for teaching English language learners in terms of both theory and pedagogy. including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics and semantics, and the support of ELLs as they acquire English language and literacy needed for their personal lives, jobs and careers, and school and university study.

• Spring

  Educ 5770 Field Experience in ESL/Bilingual Education (2cr)

  The course will meet to share and discuss experiences, such as: the whys and hows of good teaching practice in the ESL education area.

  Educ 6020 Diversity in Education (2cr)

  Rationales, concepts, and practice provide a scope of awareness of and appreciation for the role of cultural and language pluralism in school and society. Foundations and theories on the role of family and community influence on student values.

• Summer 2 (May to June block)

  Educ 6240 Foundations of Teaching for Cultural and Language Differences (2cr)

  The course prepares teachers to be advocates for and practitioners of bilingual family involvement in education. Goals and benefits of bilingual family involvement will be explored along with specific strategies for developing a partnership with families within the education system. Components of family structure, economics, cultural diversity, second language learners, communication skills and resources are integrated into the participant experience.

  MENG 6450 ESL/Bilingual Assessment: Theories, Methods, and Practices (3cr)

  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of second language testing by presenting both assessment theories and applications. It will also supply students with a general overview and recent history of assessment. Finally, it will present important terminology from the world of second language assessment.
