Nordic Study Abroad: MHA

Program Details

Travel to Sweden and Finland to explore and learn about their healthcare systems. Students will visit Stockholm, Helsinki, and surrounding destinations. Students will hear from healthcare professionals and visit facilities in each country to learn about their healthcare systems. Students will spend 10 days in Scandinavia and gain 3 elective credits for the MHA and eMHA programs. Students will gain exposure to different international healthcare systems, as well as explore Nordic destinations including Stockholm, Uppsala, and Helsinki. At the conclusion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast entrepreneurial, mandated insurance, and national health service models of international health systems.
  • Compare and contrast health and social systems of these Nordic countries to determine what is working well and what needs to improve.
  • Compare the healthcare and social welfare systems of the U.S., Sweden, and Finland.

Selection Criteria:

Participants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in the MHA or eMHA program.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.

Cost

$3,000 (Airfare NOT Included)

Must be paid in full by May 6, 2022

Deposit: $500 dollars will need to be paid immediately after you register with CE Enrollment.

Payments can now be made online! Visit this website for instructions on how to pay your deposit online and future payments. Charges should show on your account within 24 hours after registration. As always, you can pay with a credit card as well. To keep our trip costs low, we encourage the use of ACH Bank Transfers, or payments by cash or check whenever possible.

Includes: room and board, domestic transportation, and some meals.

Not included: airfare, passport, incidentals, excess baggage costs, any unscheduled travel, and some meals.

Itinerary

  • Saturday May 7: Depart SLC
  • Sunday May 8 - Friday May 13: Arrive and meet at the ARN airport to travel into downtown Stockholm. Participate in the Swedish Healthcare Academy Program with healthcare site visits, lectures regarding the healthcare system and tours of some local sites.
  • Saturday May 14: Day trip to Uppsala. Depart on the overnight ferry to Helsinki.
  • Sunday May 15: Arrive in Helsinki. Visit to Suomenlinna and Esplande.
  • Monday May 16 - Wednesday May 18: Visit the various healthcare facilities, government agency, and tour the remaining sites.

Academic Courses

Students who participate in this study abroad program will be able to register for up to three (3) semester credits through Weber State University in the following:

Program Directors

Dr. Darcy Carter, Department Chair of Health Administrative Services, MHA program Director, and Associate Professor

Dr. Miland Palmer, Public Health Program Director and Assistant Professor.

Dr. Carter has been in the department for 15 years and Dr. Palmer for 7 years. Dr. Carter traveled to the countries in which the students will be visiting in the Summer of 2018. Dr. Palmer has studied international health systems from a public health perspective. Both Dr. Carter and Dr. Palmer have traveled extensively in personal and professional travel and are well suited to conduct this experience.

Trip Cancellations

If Weber State cancels a trip for any reason, all participants will be refunded 100% of funds paid to the school. If a participant withdraws from the program for any reason, they are subject to the refund policy found on the first page of the application.  Deposits are always non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Weber State.  No refunds will be issued 30 days prior to program start date. 

Refunds will NOT be given to students due to COVID-19 concerns. Before programs were canceled in 2020, every student was given the option to withdraw from programs without penalty due to COVID-19. This year students are applying, cognizant of the pandemic. Weber State will not intentionally place students into high risk situations. We will work together with Program Leaders and Departments on canceling should the destination demonstrate increased risks, be they from COVID or any other concern. As such, students must abide by the standard refund policy.
