THIS PROGRAM IS CONSIDERED AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM. PLEASE FILL OUT THE EXCHANGE APPLICATION TO APPLY.

YOU MUST MEET WITH THE EXCHANGE COORDINATOR IN ORDER TO BE APPROVED FOR THIS PROGRAM.

Students who choose the Konan Intensive Japanese program will experience six weeks of hands-on language and cultural experience. This is a great way to increase language skills for a great price! (Must have at least 150 hours of Japanese Language instruction, or prove proficiency with Tomono-sensei.)

Destination:

  • Konan University, Kobe, Japan

Program Dates:

June 10, 2024- July 19, 2024

Important Information

This is a demanding program that is most suitable for students who have both achieved considerable success in their previous Japanese language studies and have a high degree of motivation to continue those studies.

Field Trips:

  • Himeji and Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which has remained intact over 400 years, even throughout the extensive bombing in World War II and natural disasters
  • Higashiyama area in Kyoto with a rich repository of fascinating tasteful streets and beautiful nature

Experiential Cultural Activities:

  • Wadaiko (Japanese traditional drums)
  • Visit to Minatogawa Shrine
  • Sadō (Japanese ceremonial tea-making)
  • Shodō (Japanese calligraphy with a brush pen)
  • & more!

ARRIVAL:

  • Students are requested to arrive at Kansai International Airport (KIX) between 1:00pm and 7:00pm on Friday June 7, 2024 (Japanese time). Travel agency staff will be on hand to meet inbound students at the arrival exit at Kansai International Airport. They will take you to Baggage Delivery (outgoing) and guide you to the airport limousine bus stop bound for Kobe Sannomiya.
  • Students planning to arrive after 7:00pm on Friday June 7, 2024 must consult with Konan in advance and will be required to bear the additional cost of your airport pickup arrangement.
    • If you do not take a direct flight to KIX and arrive late in the evening on June 7, there is a possibility that you may not be able to arrive in time to check in to the designated hotel that evening. In that case, you will not be able to make it on time for the orientation on June 8. In order to prevent you from missing this MANDATORY orientation, it is strongly recommended that anyone who cannot arrive by 7pm stay at a hotel near an airport the night before the designated arrival date.
  • Further information on arrival will be sent with pre-departure information in May.

Homestay:

  • Participants of this program will live with host families throughout their stay in Japan. Studying the Japanese language in an immersive environment helps to motivate and rapidly improve students' Japanese language ability. This experience also exposes students to Japanese daily life and customs, ensuring a much deeper understanding of Japanese culture than otherwise possible.
  • Families provide 2 meals per day (breakfast and dinner) on the weekdays, and 3 meals per day on the weekends
  • You will be asked to provide information that will help Konan in matching you with a host family. Please be aware that they cannot guarantee you will be matched with a host family that meets all of your preferences. They also cannot guarantee that you will be the only home stay students staying with your host family. Please be sure to fill out all questionnaires carefully and provide Konan with any additional information that you think might help in selecting a compatible host family for you (i.e. dietary restrictions, dietary dislikes, allergies, etc.)

Cost

Cost: Students pay normal tuition for the number of credits they take (normally 6 credits), plus $1,000-1,400 for 6 weeks of accommodations, insurance, and fees.

Trip Cancellations

If Weber State cancels a trip for any reason, all participants will be refunded 100% of funds paid to the school. If a participant withdraws from the program for any reason, they are subject to the refund policy found on the first page of the application.  Deposits are always non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Weber State.  No refunds will be issued 30 days prior to program start date.

Refunds will NOT be given to students due to COVID-19 concerns. Before programs were canceled in 2020, every student was given the option to withdraw from programs without penalty due to COVID-19. This year students are applying, cognizant of the pandemic. Weber State will not intentionally place students into high risk situations. We will work together with Program Leaders and Departments on canceling should the destination demonstrate increased risks, be they from COVID or any other concern. As such, students must abide by the standard refund policy.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Study Abroad Office at (801) 626-8715.
