Traditional String Classes

WSU String classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Val A. Browning Center or Burch Creek Elementary. 

 Spring classes run Jan. 29, 2024-April 17th 2024. Primo New Beginner class runs Jan. 8th 2024-May 22, 2024.

Primo

Brand New Beginners Start Here. Students should be in at least 3rd grade.

To graduate:
Complete Essential Elements Book 1
Scales: C, G, D
Eighth note rhythms
¾ time
Comfortable with slurs, hooked bowing and staccato articulation 

Allegro

2nd/3rd Year Students

To enroll:
Scales: C, G, D
Eighth note rhythms
¾ time
Comfortable with slurs, hooked bowing and staccato articulation 

To graduate:
Comfortable with all material covered in Essential Elements Book 2
Scales through 3 sharps & 2 flats, all first position
Comfortable with advanced slurring techniques and spiccato articulation.
Familiar with 6/8 time, dotted rhythms and harmonics 

Philharmonic

4th-6th Year Students 

To enroll:
Scales throught 3 sharps & 2 flats, all first position
Comfortable with advanced slurring techniques and spiccato articulation.
Familiar with 6/8 time and dotted rhythms

To graduate:
Comfortable with all material covered in Essential Elements Book 3
Play all scales 2-3 octaves with good intonation
Play moderately difficult technical passages (i.e. Suzuki Book 4 or 5) demonstrating good bow technique, articulation, vibrato and accuracy
Play slow, lyrical passages with good intonation and musicality with attention to detail
Be capable of sight-reading music at a medium level of difficulty with few errors


Materials Needed for Fall and Spring:

  • Instrument

  • Notebook with practice record/check off charts
  • All violins and violas will need a shoulder rest
  • All cellos and basses will need a rock stop
  • Rosin
  • Microfiber cloth
