Elementoring: Mentor Elementary Kids
We are not currently sending volunteers to schools. Thank you for your interest! Please fill out the form and we will be in contact in the spring!
Elementoring is an initiative through the Office of Mentoring Mentoring geared towards addressing college-going aspirations in elementary students. You can make a difference by volunteering to mentor kids after school and supporting their literacy development.
Weber State students can volunteer to mentor elementary students in the Ogden community by focusing on literacy development and increasing college knowledge through one-on-one support in an after school program.
Be a Volunteer!
- Register to participate in Elementoring as a volunteer mentor.
(You’ll get to list a preference for a school and sign up for the days and times you can mentor.) - Attend a program orientation and literacy program training.
- Mentor!
You will have support from the Elementoring Lead, mentoring staff, and fellow mentors throughout your time as a volunteer. You will also visit your selected school in teams, so you’ll work with friends to create a fun learning atmosphere for elementary students.
Benefits of Volunteering
- We learn to read and then read to learn. Students who read at their grade reading level are more likely to graduate high school and go to college, as are students who learn about college at an earlier age. By volunteering to mentor an elementary student through this program, you are supporting their literacy development and are introducing them to important college knowledge - just by being a role model of what a college student can look like!
- You can log your volunteer hours through GivePulse, get a shirt from our program, make lifelong friends and a lasting impact on our community, especially the elementary kids you mentor.
- Mentoring is a high impact educational experience and counts towards your participation in the Wildcat Advantage Program.
- It can lead to a job with Ogden School District.
When and Where
- Mentoring will take place at Liberty Elementary and Hillcrest Elementary.
- Training and support for mentors will be provided through the Peer Mentor Program at Weber State University in Ogden.
- Mentors can volunteer between Monday and Friday for one or two hours per day.
- The after school program runs from about 2:30 - 5 p.m. Choose a time that works best for you!
- Volunteer as little as one hour per week!
- As a mentor, elementary students will look up to you and learn to expect your visit. We ask that you commit to mentoring students for at least one semester.
