English Placement

Your English (ENGL) course requirement is referred to as your Composition Requirement

You need to find out which English course you should start with to complete your Composition requirement based on your placement level and other factors. Do those next steps here: Know Where You're Going to See Where You Start: Completing Your Composition Requirement

Automatic Placement

English placement is based on your ACT English and reading scores from within the past 48 months. If you took the SAT, that score is converted to an ACT equivalent. Scores more than 48 months old are considered expired and will not be accepted.

ACT Scores & Corresponding Placement
The lower of the reading and English scores will be used for placement.

ACT English Score

  • 12 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 13-16: ENGL 1005, ENGL 1006 or ENGL 1007
  • 17-28: ENGL 1010
  • 29 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

ACT Reading Score

  • 12 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 13-16: ENGL 1005
  • 17-28: ENGL 1010
  • 29 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

SAT Scores & Cooresponding Placement
Weber State uses two-digit SAT subscores for placement. These are then converted into an ACT score equivilant, but students only need to provide SAT subscores. Students can access these in their College Board account. If scores place you in different courses for writing and language vs. reading, the lower score will be used for placement.

SAT Writing & Language Score

  • 18 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 19-23: ENGL 0955 or ENGL 1005
  • 24-34: ENGL 1010
  • 35 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

SAT Reading Score

  • 18 or lower: ENGL 0900
  • 19-23: ENGL 0955 or ENGL 1005
  • 24-34: ENGL 1010
  • 35 or higher: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

Placement Testing

If you did not take the ACT in the past 48 months or you want to challenge your automatic placement, take the ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills tests to find your placement. You may take ACCUPLACER up to two times within a 12-month period.

ACCUPLACER uses adaptive technology to tailor the test to your skill level by increasing or decreasing difficulty based on your responses to previous questions.

Once you’ve taken the test, your placement will be reflected in CatTracks. Refer to the English path webpage to see which sequence of English courses makes the most sense for you and your major.

ACCUPLACER Score & Corresponding Placement
  • 236 or lower on either test: ENGL 0900
  • 237-249 or lower on either test: ENGL 1005 or ENGL1006, followed by ENGL 1007
  • 250-269 on both tests: ENGL 1010
  • 270-300 on both tests: ENGL 2010 or ENGL 2015

International students should visit Weber State's ESL Pathways through the International Student & Scholar Center. Contact Mary A. Machira at marymachira@weber.edu or 801-626-6839 for more information.

No Placement: Start at the Beginning

If your ACT/SAT scores are from more than 48 months ago, they are considered expired and you will need to take the ACCUPLACER test to receive placement.

If you do not take the placement test, you will only be able to enroll in the lowest level English class Weber State offers, ENGL 0900. This could:

  • Increase the cost of earning your degree
  • Delay graduation

Talk with an advisor today about free placement testing and how it can benefit you.

Score Expiration & Petitioning

  • ACT and SAT scores expire after 48 months.

If your test scores have very recently expired you may petition to have them used. Contact the Department of English at 801-626-6251 or englishdept@weber.edu for more information.
