Entrance/Scholarship Auditions

 

You do not have to be a Music major or minor to participate in our ensembles and earn scholarships.  If you would like to participate in an ensemble (or several ensembles), scroll down, find your group(s), and audition for each.  We look forward to hearing from you!

 

AUDITIONS FOR ORCHESTRA SCHOLARSHIPS

AND/OR STRINGS MAJORS (INCLUDING GUITAR)
 

A limited number of Wind/Percussion players can apply for orchestra scholarships through auditions. Contact the Orchestra Director, Dr. Francisco de Galvez (fgalvez@weber.edu) for more information. 

 
Scheduled auditions for the 2022-2023 school year have passed, but we will still audition students individually.  Please contact Dr. Shi-Hwa Wang (swang@weber.edu) and Dr. Francisco de Galvez (fgalvez@weber.edu) to set up an audition.  If you are not able to attend an in-person audition, you may submit a video audition here.  Your video should include the elements detailed in the next paragraph.  
 
Please fill out this form and submit it with your audition.
 
Prepare two major scales and one minor scale, with three octaves preferred, with a minimum of two octaves for string bass. Prepare two movements or pieces in contrasting styles and/or tempi. (Please note that entire audition time is only 15 minutes). Accompaniment is welcome but not required.

AUDITIONS FOR BAND SCHOLARSHIPS

AND/OR BRASS AND WOODWINDS MAJORS


Scheduled auditions for band scholarships and/or brass and woodwinds majors for the 2022-2023 school year have passed, but it may still be possible to audition individually.  Please contact Dr. Dan Jonas (danieljonas@weber.edu) and Dr. JT Womack (justinwomack@weber.edu) about scheduling.  If you are not able to attend an in-person audition, you may submit a video audition here.  Your video should include the elements detailed in the next paragraph.  

For auditions on woodwinds or brass instruments, prepare the following:

1. Play a chromatic scale and three different major scales of your choice.
2. Perform excerpts from two contrasting solos or etudes for a total of no longer than four minutes.  The materials should demonstrate technique and expression and may be performed with or without accompaniment.

PERCUSSION


Scheduled auditions for Percussion for the 2022-2023 school year have passed, but it may still be possible to audition individually.  Please contact Dr. Dan Jonas (danieljonas@weber.edu) and Dr. JT Womack (justinwomack@weber.edu) about scheduling.  If you are not able to attend an in-person audition, you may submit a video audition here.  Your video should include the elements detailed in the next paragraph. 

 

Please prepare in the following areas of percussion:

  • Snare Drum Solo or Etude of student choice (Orchestral or Rudimentary).
  • Two Mallet Solo/Etude/Excerpt, Scales and Arpeggios (two octaves each).

AND/OR

  • Four Mallet Solo or Etude of choice (marimba or vibraphone)

Also Choose One of the Following Categories:

  • Timpani Solo or Etude of student choice.

OR

  • Drum set:  a sample of your time/style playing/soloing in the following styles:  up-tempo swing, funk and Latin/Afro-Cuban (choose one:  bossa nova, samba, mambo, 12/8 Afro-Cuban)  Three-minute time limit.

Do your best to prepare something in as many of the above areas as you are able.

PIANO

Perform two early advanced level memorized pieces from contrasting style periods (such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Modern).  Demonstrate piano technique fluency by playing a scale (major and 1 minor form of the scale) and an arpeggio (both major and minor) in your audition video.  (Please note that entire audition video should only be 15 minutes.)

VOICE/CHORAL    

 

Live auditions for the 2022-2023 school year have passed.  We are still very happy to receive online submissions, which can be submitted here.  Your video should include the elements detailed in the next paragraph (except for the sight singing portion).  You may contact Dr. Karen Bruestle (kbrookens@weber.edu) if you have any questions about your audition.

 
Prepare two songs. Each must be less than two minutes in length, classical, in contrasting styles and languages. You must have your own accompanist or a CD with accompaniment. The audition will also include sight singing.
