Summer in Ogden: Five Outdoor Adventures to Try this Year
As Albert Einstein once said, “look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." There is no doubt that nature is indeed a boundless source of inspiration, rejuvenation and knowledge. I encourage you to use this beautiful time of the year to explore nature and embark on an outdoorsy journey that will leave you feeling more alive and connected than ever before!
If you’re not sure what to do this summer, let us help you discover great resources and unlock some fresh creativity! Because why would you want to miss out on the opportunities available, especially when living in a place as remarkable as Utah? Whether you’re looking to explore the great outdoors without breaking the bank or simply wanting to find a peaceful spot to unwind, these five do-able and low effort activities will provide you with the inspiration and ideas you’re seeking.
1. Paddle Boarding Through Serene Waters
Paddleboarding is a great combination of an active and relaxing way of exploring Utah’s beauty. Even if you're a beginner, hopping on the board and paddling away is accessible and enjoyable.
Some great places nearby that offer stunning views include: Causey Reservoir, Willard Bay State Park or Pineview Reservoir.
If you're not quite ready to venture out on your own, consider joining one of our organized paddle boarding experiences. Plus, remember that you can rent hardshell and inflatable paddle boards at the Outdoor Program rental center!
2. Camping Under the Stars
Camping has always had a lot of positive benefits including stress reduction, reconnection with others and nature, and even helping with unplugging from technology. If you haven't done it yet, this is your reminder! Utah's safe camping spots like Antelope Island State Park, Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest and Bountiful Peak Campground offer the perfect opportunity to unwind from daily stressors. Don’t forget, our rental center is open all summer long if you need a tent, sleeping bag, or other gear (students get a 30% discount with an active Wildcard).
3. Hitting the Trails
Hiking is an excellent low-budget activity that will allow you to enjoy breathtaking views without straining your finances and buying expensive gear. Whether you prefer a challenging trek or an easy walk, hiking offers flexibility to match your individual preferences and fitness capabilities. We encourage you to discover the best hikes in Ogden for yourself and check out our Summer Waterfall Hikes Series.
4. Kayaking in Scenic Outdoors
There is something special about kayaking as it gives you a unique opportunity to explore hidden coves and tranquil waters. Kayaking offers a versatile and enjoyable way to spend time outdoors, no matter where you’re at with your skill levels. Whether you want to seek a new adventure, relax, experience a unique full-body workout or explore the waterways with someone else, kayaking will not disappoint you.
The best part? There are a lot of places for water sports near Ogden and you can rent kayaks at the rental center too!
5. Chasing Sunsets and New Horizons
Sometimes, the best adventures require only a moment of stillness. In Utah, stunning sunsets are our daily spectacle. Embrace nature’s beauty and let it show you the perfect ending to your summer day in one of the top sunset view spot near Ogden.
You could even combine one of these other activities such as hiking or paddle boarding for an even more epic sunset viewing! Or, simply watch a stunning sunset right on campus.
So, what adventure will you go on first? Growing up in a European city, I never considered myself outdoorsy. But here I am, sharing ways for everyone to stay active after I decided to get out and explore a bit. I understand it can seem impossible. That’s why here at the WSU Outdoor Program everyone would love to help kickstart your journey, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned outdoors enthusiast. We're all about providing resources and guiding you to discover the greatest gift – the beauty of nature and your own way of exploring it. Remember: “not all who wander are lost” (J.R.R. Tolkien).
Happy adventures everyone!
