Research Areas of Interest

Dr. Clark studies the pathogenesis, interactions, and treatments of various microbes (MRSA, Salmonella, the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri, malaria, herpes simplex virus) using microbiology and cell culture techniques with bioinformatics.

Specific Projects

MRSA/bacteriophage: determine the ability of phage to penetrate biofilms and act synergistically with antibiotics against MRSA
Salmonella ID'ing: finding Salmonella in local waterways and identifying the specific serovar by sequencing their CRISPR loci to inform outbreak tracking
Naegleria drug susceptibility: treating the brain-eating amoeba with novel drugs and measuring how well they survive and kill human cells in culture
CRISPR deletion of viral receptors: deleting viral receptors for herpes simplex virus 1 and enterovirus 71, then challenge the edited cells with virus to evaluate receptor usage
Codon bias: a bioinformatics project comparing codon usage in parasites compared to their hosts (malaria in mosquitoes and humans)
