Submission Guidelines

Metaphor is now accepting submissions for Volume 44. We ask that all guidelines listed below are followed in order for your piece(s) to be considered for publication. 

Eligibility

• Submissions are currently only open to undergraduate students enrolled at Weber State University. This includes works from those with multiple authors/creators.
• Submissions are accepted year-round for our annual Spring publication. Seniors anticipating graduation should submit prior to their graduation date.
• All works submitted must be original and previously unpublished.
• Metaphor reserves first rights to accepted pieces; however, students may submit their work elsewhere after Metaphor accepts or rejects them.

Guidelines

• Submissions should fit one of the following literary categories: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, music, visual arts, or film. Hybrid works are accepted. If you are interested in submitting work outside of these categories, contact metaphor@weber.edu.
• Students may submit as many pieces as they’d like to different categories, but written pieces are each limited to 5,000 words, and poetry to five poems no longer than two pages each.
• All written submissions must be in 12 pt., Times New Roman font.
• Foreign language pieces are accepted if accompanied by an English translation, and may be subject to additional review by native users of the submitted language.

How to Submit

• Include a single separate cover page file with the following information:
  • Contact information with name, address, phone number, email address, and your area(s) of undergraduate study at WSU (undeclared majors are eligible). Collaborative works should include names and majors for all contributors, but need only supply remaining contact information from a single individual.
  • List of all works being submitted for consideration, and their respective literary category
  • Author’s name should appear as they would want it printed. Authors employing a pseudonym will need to note both their name and pseudonym.
• Each submitted piece should be an individual file with the following:
  • Contact details should be on the cover sheet only. Do not include any identifying information on your other submitted files to allow for a blind selection process.
  • Title of piece and page numbers must be listed on every page of the manuscript.
  • Include a “Works Cited” page when needed. The format chosen should be noted on the cover sheet.
• Cover Sheet and submitted works should be sent in a single email with multiple electronic files to metaphor@weber.edu. Pieces should be formatted as .docx for written work, .mp3 for recorded music, .mp4 for video, or .jpeg for visual arts.

Selection Process

• All submissions will be judged as blind entries during the Spring semester – names of the authors will be kept confidential until final selections are made.
• Prior to publication, students will receive decision notification via email.
• All judging decisions are final.
