R. Chad Valdez, BS ‘09, MCJ ‘24

CJ Department Head & concurrent instructor, Tooele County School District/Utah State University

How did you get started in law enforcement?

While earning my undergraduate degree at Weber State University, a working judge and Weber State professor afforded me the opportunity to intern at a local private prison company, which launched my law enforcement career.

Why did you decide to pursue a Master of Criminal Justice?

Despite a decade in the field, I hesitated to pursue my Master of Criminal Justice. I later left the law enforcement career to teach and decided to pursue my graduate degree. Completing this program in two years was a decision I do not regret. I encourage correctional or patrol officers who feel there is insufficient time to enroll; it can be best managed alongside shift work. My only regret is wishing I had done it sooner.

Why Weber State University?

At Weber State, the enrollment numbers for each course are designed to foster a close-knit learning community where students can connect with their peers and professors. The university excels at providing professors with a rich blend of field experience and strong educational backgrounds. The courses are tailored to the needs of working graduate students, and the professors are understanding and accommodating.

How did the MCJ program impact your career?

My education at Weber State was a perfect mix of foundational knowledge from the undergraduate program and deeper insights into the criminal justice system from the graduate program. This comprehensive approach enhanced my research, critical thinking, and writing skills. If you have a passion for criminal justice, this program is an excellent choice. Even for a working professional, managing two courses is a feasible commitment for a dedicated student.
