Frequently Asked Questions
General MBA FAQs
- What's the difference between the regular MBA and Virtual MBA tracks?
The primary mode of delivery for the MBA program is taking classes in person at the Weber State Davis Campus in Layton, Utah, typically from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Mountain Time and sometimes online.
The Virtual MBA has classes typically from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Mountain Time online using Zoom software, allowing class "attendance" from anywhere in the world with a reliable internet connection.
- Does the program involve full or part-time study?
The program is for working professionals attending part-time study. However, students can choose their pace without confinement by either cohort.
- Do I need a business degree to be admitted to the program?
No, admission requires a completed Bachelor's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution and not necessarily a business-related field. Typically, 40% of our students are non-business majors. Official transcripts are required for each school attended - unofficial transcripts are acceptable only from Weber State University.
- Is professional work experience required to be admitted?
Post-undergraduate career experience is not required, but it strengthens an application and mitigates a lower undergraduate GPA. Applicants with more career experience get more out of the curriculum and their expertise enriches the classroom and contributes to team projects. The average post-undergraduate work experience of successful applicants is five years.
- Can I apply if I am still completing my bachelor's degree?
Yes, you can submit your application to the MBA program while in the final stages of completing your bachelor's degree. Unfortunately, taking MBA classes before applying to the program is impossible, but we do offer conditional admission for applicants close to completing their undergraduate degree. The admissions committee will evaluate your application and you will not be formally admitted until the bachelor's degree has been made official on your transcripts.
- What is the typical schedule for MBA classes?
Regardless of the mode of delivery, classes are held weekly on weekday nights from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. Some elective courses are offered over the weekend (Friday evening and all day Saturday).
Classes generally involve 15-20 hours of work outside of class per week. We keep our schedule as stable as possible from year to year; we teach all required courses at least twice per semester and electives and foundation courses are offered once per year. All in-person classes are at Weber State’s Davis Campus in Layton.
- How long will it take me to complete the MBA degree?
MBA students can complete their degrees in as short as about one year to up to six calendar years, starting from the first semester during which the student has registered for and begun taking classes. Students who exceed this requirement may submit a letter of appeal to the MBA Program Director to request waiving this requirement. Students who fail to enroll in MBA courses for three consecutive semesters must apply for readmission to the program.
Students with a business degree from an accredited institution will complete 36 credit hours, which can be completed in two years on a part-time basis or within about a year if done at a full-time pace (2 courses) during some course blocks.
For non-business majors, we have five MBA-level Foundations courses (3 credit hours each) required of all non-business majors totaling to 54 credit hours.
Admissions Overview
For admissions and application requirements, visit the Admission Requirements page.
- Credit Hour Requirements
The MBA degree ordinarily requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate work for persons with a recent undergraduate business degree from an AACSB-accredited business school. Individuals with business undergraduate degrees from non-AACSB-accredited schools may be required to complete additional Foundations courses (3 credit hours each) contingent on departmental analysis of their undergraduate transcripts.
- Grade Requirements
To earn the MBA degree, candidates must complete all MBA program courses with a "C" or higher grade. In addition, the overall program GPA must be 3.0 or higher. Students may repeat an elective course if they receive a grade less than C or another elective to take its place. Failure to maintain a 3.0 grade point average after two consecutive semesters will result in academic probation per departmental policies.
- Non-MBA Electives
Qualified students may take up to two MAcc (Master of Accounting) or MTax (Master of Taxation) courses as MBA electives, counting six credit hours toward their MBA elective requirements. MBA students may also use up to two courses in the Weber State Master of Health Administration program, counting six credit hours toward their MBA elective requirements.
- Program Prerequisites
Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or be in the final stage of completing the undergraduate degree. Suppose the applicant does not have proof of completing their bachelor’s degree at the start of the following semester. In that case, they will not be allowed to start classes in the MBA program until the MBA Program office receives an official transcript for the listed bachelor’s degree.
Completion of a course in college algebra or equivalent is required to enroll in MBA courses. Basic computer competency is also required.
- Transfer Credits/ Residency Requirements
Students who have completed business-related graduate coursework at another AACSB-accredited institution may apply for a transfer of graduate credits to satisfy their Goddard School MBA program of study. All transfers are subject to program approval. The admissions committee may consider the transfer of graduate credits from non-AACSB-accredited institutions. Contact the Enrollment Director for more information.
