Interdisciplinary Studies Internship FAQ

• What is an internship?

  An internship is a formal work agreement between a BIS student and an employer. The purpose of the internship is to provide BIS students with opportunities to work in their chosen fields of study. BIS students may use their current employer, however, the internship should provide a new learning experience or work context. Although the beginning and ending dates may vary slightly, most internships are completed during an academic semester. Currently admitted BIS student with 25 percent of their academic coursework completed may apply for an internship. Non-admitted BIS students are not eligible for a BIS internship.

• How many work hours are required for an internship?

  Internship credit is awarded though registration in BIS 3850 which has variable credits associated with it. 50 hours of work are required for 1 credit hour, 100 hours of work for 2 credit hours, and 150 work hours for 3 credit hours. To register for BIS 3850, you must first have an approved plan from the BIS Director and a course ID number from the BIS secretary. Please email the BIS office at bis@weber.edu to arrange for this information.

• Can I be paid during my internship?

  Yes, however, the actual amount of pay is determined by the student and the internship employer.

• Is there help in finding an internship?

  Yes, Weber’s Career Services office regularly posts internship opportunities on Career Services Center website

• What steps must I complete to set up my internship?
  1. Identify a potential employer and conceptualize a plan for an internship with that employer.
  2. Formally describe your proposed concept using the Internship Application and Approval Form.
  3. Schedule an appointment and meet with the BIS Director to get your internship plan approved.
  4. Contact the BIS Department Advisor to determine which section of BIS 3850 to enroll in. Remember, you will need a course ID for this step.
• What should I do during the course of the internship?
  1. Keep a daily journal summarizing what you learned/accomplished that date.
  2. Keep track of how your daily activities articulated with your internship goals and objectives.
  3. Be positive and professional with all members of the employer’s organization—remember you’re representing Weber State in this experience.
• What should I do at the conclusion of the internship?
  1. Arrange a meeting with your internship supervisor to complete the Internship Evaluation Form.
  2. Submit your (1) Internship activity log, and (2) Internship Report Powerpoint to the BIS Director.
  3. Contact the BIS Department Advisor at bis@weber.edu to schedule a meeting with the BIS Director to review your Internship Report Powerpoint with the BIS Director.
