Emergency Healthcare
Weber State University’s Paramedic Studies and Emergency Healthcare programs offer emergency responders lifesaving skills and experience to advance their careers.
These programs are offered in a career-ladder format; you must earn your associate’s degree in paramedic studies, as well as a paramedic certificate of completion, before moving on to the bachelor’s degree program.
The Department of Emergency Healthcare offers the following programs:
- One-semester, entry-level course for those interested in becoming emergency medical technicians. This program grants a certificate and allows students to take an exam that grants licensure to practice.
- Thirty-six (36) credit hour program to prepare students to become a paramedic (requires current Utah or appropriate state EMT certification)
Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic Studies
- Designed for paramedics who wish to make themselves more marketable in the workforce and/or work in a field of supervision or education (requires current Utah or appropriate state EMT certification in order to apply)
Bachelor of Science in Emergency Healthcare Sciences
- Offers skills to enhance the careers of those who are already nationally licensed or certified paramedics (Paramedic Certificate and AAS in Paramedic Studies, or equivalent, are needed to progress to the BS program)
- This rigorous six-credit course prepares experienced paramedics and registered nurses to become a part of a highly functioning critical care transport team.
- Weber State’s American Heart Association Authorized Training Center offers several courses including basic life support, HeartSaver CPR/AED/Basic First Aid and more.

Many of your program prerequisites also count as general education requirements. Review the checklist closely and come to your advising appointment prepared with questions.

Helpful Information
- Taking more than two science courses, including math, in a semester may be overwhelming. Balance your course load with other general education requirements.
- Medical Terminology (HTHS 1101) is highly recommended before your first course in anatomy and physiology.
- Start working toward your AAS degree while completing your program prerequisites. Find the required AAS support course by scrolling to the bottom of the program preview page. Some of these courses also count for general education requirements.

Health Sciences or Zoology Anatomy & Physiology
The following video spells out the differences between the Health Sciences Integrated Human Anatomy & Physiology (HTHS) class series, or the Zoology Human Anatomy & Physiology (ZOOL) class series.
Students need to complete either the HTHS or ZOOL series for entrance into most College of Health Professions programs.
