WHY WEBER STATE?
I'm from Southern California, and when it came time to look for colleges I was looking for something out of state. I have family in the Ogden area, and grew up riding bikes around and visiting the duck pond. Some of my siblings went to Weber State, so I had connections here. I decided to come to Weber for a year. But after coming here, I found I loved it. I had so many opportunities and Weber has such great resources, I decided to stay. Plus, I met my husband here!
WHY HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT?
I always knew I wanted to go into business, but I loved the people side of it. Human Resources is a great way to do both. It sometimes gets a bad reputation (thank you, The Office), but it's really an exciting field. You get to work in talent management, and you get to really help people develop and become their best selves at work. I really wanted to work with people, and I knew that this path would offer me a lot of opportunities and fun challenges throughout my career.
BEYOND A GRADE
There are lots of opportunities and resources for students here. I love that the professors care about you beyond a grade. They want you to be prepared to enter the workforce. And the resources available are amazing - there are lots of internships and jobs.
FACULTY IMPACT
Most of my professors have made an impact and have shown me that what I was learning was applicable outside of the classroom. I had the privilege of working with Rachel Child outside of the classroom in the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) club, and that was excellent. I got the chance to network with SHRM professionals and have experiences with area HR leaders as well.
ADVICE
Be outgoing. Even in you're shy, get involved in college. It's okay to have a lot of interests. You don't need to know exactly what you're doing or what you want to do, and what you're doing doesn't have to be exactly what you want to do. Just get involved.
WHAT'S NEXT
I accepted a job offer early this week at Maverik as a Talent Acquisition Partner. I'm excited to return to Maverik as I interned with them the summer of my junior year! I got the internship because I was able to network with a VP at Maverik during one of my classes here at WSU (thank you, Brett Merrell!) I'll be overseeing the hiring needs of 100+ stores while helping out with some corporate recruiting. Beyond that, I will be looking for ways to continue to grow my career, perhaps focusing on corporate or technical recruiting, or possibly going into learning and development.
