MAcc '24 outstanding grad

Believe in yourself - put the work in.

WHY WEBER STATE?

I got my undergraduate degree from BYU, and after a year or two I decided I wanted a masters degree in accounting. I knew I wanted a school in Utah. I was weighting tuition and costs, reputation, etc. of all of the different options...and what pushed me over the edge was that both the business school and the school of accounting and taxation at Weber State were accredited by the AACSB. Plus, I grew up in Kaysville, which is not too far away.

WHY ACCOUNTING?

Everything in my life just kind of led me to accounting. My dad and my two older brothers are accountants. I went to Davis high, and they have an accounting class there, and it's just kind of what everyone did... it was a foregone conclusion. I had part-time jobs doing accounting when I was younger, and I was kind of following in my family's footsteps. There wasn't really any family pressure, but a family precedence. Plus, I was good at it. I enjoy numbers. It was a good match for me, so I stuck with it.

SMALLER CLASSES

What I really like about Weber State is that the classes are smaller and the program isn't as huge as other larger universities. Everyone seems to know each other, and usually they came up through the undergrad program together so it seems like everyone is friends. There's a great environment in the classes. When you have to do group projects, you have people to help you, and everyone knows each other.

FACULTY IMPACT

Before I was in the masters program I had to take some leveling courses. Professor Snow did a great job helping me establish my accounting base, and providing resources we could reference throughout the year and into our professions. I loved Professor Pace's classes. He taught the tax classes, and although, if I had my way I wouldn't have taken a lot of the tax classes, the way it ended up a lot of my electives were tax courses. I loved the way he presented the materials - they were easy to digest and understand without a huge workload.

ADVICE

Believe in yourself and put the work in. Sometimes it's easy if you don't like it or don't get it to not do it. But even if you don't like it, if you do it, you're going to get something out of it.

WHAT'S NEXT

I am working full-time now for a mental health care provider doing accounting for them. I'll keep working, and get my CPA license, hopefully soon.
