Tyson Mason Memorial Scholarship
 

Tyson’s passion for helping others started at a young age.  Tyson entered into the fire academy at age 18, recieving a degree in Fire Science. He worked at Kaysville City Fire Department while completing his certificate in paramedicine at Weber State University. Following his paramedic training, Tyson started working for the Ogden City Fire Department before finally landing his dream job at Salt Lake City Fire Department. Tyson was also a member of the first graduating cohort from Weber State's Critical Care Transport Program. Following the receipt of his Flight Paramedic Certification, Tyson was hired at Intermountain LifeFlight.

Tyson passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Strawberry resevoir.  Tyson was returning home to his wife and newborn son following a shift on the LifeFlight helicopter in Roosevelt, Utah.

In honor of his memory and commitment to the areas of paramedicine and critical care transport, Tyson's family left a scholarship endowement for those following a similar path. Tyson's passion and commitment to EMS education and patient advocacy will always live on at Weber State.

Criteria: This scholarship will be awarded each year to two (2) students meeting the following criteria: The first recipient must be a candidate for the critical care transport course. The second recipient must be a candidate for the Bachelors of Emergency Healthcare Sciences degree. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and may be enrolled full or part-time. 

Designation: Recipients shall be selected through nomination, or application. Designation of this schoarship is by a committee made up of faculty from the Department of Emergency Healthcare, and/or a supervisor or co-worker of Tyson's. Nominations can be submitted by a peer, advisor, faculty, supervisor, or co-worker.  The top candidates will be reviewed by Tyson's family and chosen in collaboration with the selection committee. Partial funds will be dispersed Fall, Spring or Summer for those declared in the BS in Emergency Healthcare. Partial funds will be dispersed on for Summer for those taking the Critical Care course.
