Hybrid Rocket System Presentation
Mechanical Engineering Senior Steven Dipani and Professor Dustin Birch recently represented Weber State at the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics Forum 2024 in Alexandria, Virginia. Steven presented at the student poster section on behFalf of Dr. Birch’s research team currently working to develop a hybrid rocket system used to evaluate high-temperature materials.

WSU to receive a grant from the Department of Energy
This grant is a "living Lab" that will bring together SPARC, Mechanical Engineering and facilities management!
The Weber State University (WSU) IAC aims to train the next generation of energy engineers while providing energy assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs). The WSU IAC will partner with the existing University of Utah IAC and local manufacturers to provide hands-on training opportunities for WSU students, launch courses in energy engineering, and run pre-college outreach programs. This project will also use WSU’s on-campus smart buildings and geothermal and solar resources as a “living lab” for additional hands-on student learning opportunities.

Professional Sales Instructor Alex Lawrence was asked to join and accepted a seat on the Board of Directors for the First Tee of Utah. It is a volunteer position for two years and it helps kids with no money and/or difficult home situations learn to play golf, get to play golf for free, provides equipment for them to use as well as golf lessons and mentoring.

New Deputy Director of the Rocky Mountain Center of Occupational and Environmental Health
Matthew Hughes, MD is the new Deputy Director of the Rocky Mountain Center of Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH). The RMCOEH is one of 18 national education research centers designated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). As a result of SB-172 legislative action, Weber State University (WSU) will be co-managing the center with the University of Utah. WSU will receive approximately $800,000 of continuing state appropriations and other corporate funds to provide a transformative interdisciplinary educational experience that will meet the urgent need for more occupational safety health professionals. Dr. Hughes will collaborate with our faculty to develop a post baccalaureate certificate in occupational health professions and an undergraduate degree in environmental health and safety. Conversations have already begun with faculty from Health Professions, Science, and EAST colleges.
New Director of the Advanced Research and Solutions Center
Ian Harvey, Ph.D. is the new Director of the Advanced Research and Solutions Center (formerly the USTAR Innovation Center). The Advanced Research and Solutions Center will provide access to resources that support the development and transition of new technologies, processes, and solutions, primarily in advanced materials and advanced manufacturing. The applied research at the center will enable new technology to transition to successful business and government enterprises while providing applied educational opportunities for students and faculty.
The funding for the Director of the Advanced Research and Solutions Center is from a state contract from the Governor's office of Economic Opportunity through EAST to fund a center for advanced composites materials and structures.

Eccles Fellowship: Randy Hurd
The Honors Eccles Fellows Program encourages faculty to develop their teaching and scholarly interests through teaching in the Honors Program. An Eccles Fellow develops and teaches a new class on a topic related to their scholarly interests. Eccles Fellows are compensated with 3 hours of teaching time and 3 hours of release time to pursue research related to the class.

Alyssa Mock - Recipient of the Paul Drude Award
Dr. Alyssa Mock is currently an assistant professor at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, USA. She receives the ICSE-9 Paul Drude Award for her pioneering work on generalized ellipsometric analysis of ultra-wide bandgap metal oxides with low-crystal symmetry. She has also worked to uncover the stress and strain relationships within low symmetry materials to provide a pathway to use ellipsometry in understanding of how these low symmetry materials behave under the influence of perturbations due to strain or stress.

WSU Engineering Degree Helps Graduate Work on Nation’s Defense
OGDEN, Utah – At age 5, Elaine Cope’s dad taught her to weld, while her grandma taught her to sew; she combined those interests and turned them into a manufacturing engineering technology degree at Weber State University in 2017 and a career at Northrop Grumman, working on a new defense system with the U.S Air Force.
The connections may not seem obvious, but design creativity is at the core of Cope’s interests.

Mechanical Engineering gets accredited by ABET
The Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor of Science) program, administered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, began in 2019 as an expansion of an existing two-year pre-engineering program. In fall 2020, the program enrolled 105 full-time and 111 part-time students supported by six full-time faculty members, one part-time faculty member and two staff members. The program had its first graduate in December 2019, and produced three graduates in the 2019-20 academic year.

Not too long ago Natalie Taylor, a disabled, recently divorced mother of two daughters on the autism spectrum, was somehow stretching $1,000 a month to meet her family's expenses. Now, with help from a Utah organization, she is on her way to a well-paying career in tech with skills she never knew that she could develop.

FLL 2021 Championship
This year's FIRST LEGO League tournament participants raised $2,895 for the Utah Food Bank. That equals over 10,000 meals for Utah kids. This virtual event did not stop the 51 Northern Utah teams from competing and having fun. Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers!

For this year's Highest Paid Industrial Production Technology Graduates ranking, we looked at 34 colleges that offer a bachelor's in industrial production tech.
WSU Engineering: Bronze Level Recognition for the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program
The Diversity Recognition Program was created by the American Society of Engineering Education to publicly recognize those engineering and engineering technology colleges that make significant, measurable progress in increasing diversity, inclusion, and degree attainment outcomes of their programs. Twenty-one applications were submitted in the Fall 2020 application cycle and reviewed to determine their acceptability for Bronze Level status, which at the moment is the highest level of recognition in the program. Each application was reviewed by 3 reviewers using a rubric drawn from the ADRP guidelines. An interactive panel discussion was also used to ensure that the reviewers were consistent in their recommendation on the acceptability of the application.

Interior Design Student wins second place in the 2020 Opportunity Quest Competition
Weber State University's Goddard School of Business and Economics and the Hall Global Entrepreneurship Center are pleased to announce Willow Interiors, LLC. as the second-place winner for the 2020 Opportunity Quest Competition. Laura Bowers, an interior design student, entered her business plan for Willow Interiors, LLC from her IDT 3025 course in the 2020 Opportunity Quest Competition, winning 2nd place and a $3000 scholarship!
Honors Eccles Fellowship
Brian Rague, associate dean and computer science professor, and Jessica Greenberg, associate professor of Theatre, were selected for the Honors Eccles Fellowship to deliver our interdisciplinary class Creative Computing and Theatre Design: Performance in a Digital World.
Exemplary Collaboration Award is the Global Community Engaged Learning program
Weber State’s Global Community Engaged Learning program received the Exemplary Collaboration Award. The program is led by six Weber State faculty and staff: Kristen Arnold, interior design; Jeremy Farner, building design & construction; Jay Hill, football head coach; Jacie Johnson, interior design; Shauna Morris, interior design; Julie Rich, Social & Behavioral Sciences dean. The Global Community Engaged Learning program undertakes projects in developing nations to help alleviate poverty and helps Weber State students develop skills and confidence to be proactive global citizens. Every year 100+ WSU students are involved in the design, fundraising, planning and execution of an international humanitarian trip.

Weber State net-zero home goes on the market
OGDEN — A central Ogden home built by a team of Weber State University professors and students that’s meant to represent the future of green building is on the market.
“I firmly believe this is what needs to happen,” said Jeremy Farner, an associate professor in the university’s building design and construction program.

WSU Offers Low-Cost, Flexible Learn and Work Courses
OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University is offering flexible, short-term training courses and certificate programs to help prepare and enhance career opportunities in high-demand fields. The classes are part of Utah’s Learn & Work educational initiative. The Legislature passed H.B. 5010 to encourage career development and workforce engagement for citizens recently displaced by COVID-19. The outreach and education initiative was created in partnership with the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), Talent Ready Utah and the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE). CARES Act funds are supporting the new and expanded programs and courses.
Many summer youth programs went virtual or drastically changed because of COVID-19
Weber State’s Pre-Freshman Program (PREP), a free six-week summer course in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for junior high students in the Ogden, Weber and Davis School Districts, is being held in a virtual format this summer as opposed to previous summers.

WSU Heavy-Civil Team and Design-Build Team placed 1st and 3rd
The Associated Schools of Construction is the professional association for the development and advancement of construction education, where the sharing of ideas and knowledge inspires, guides and promotes excellence in curricula, teaching, research and service. Held annually the first weekend in February, student teams work intensely for 18-24 hours producing a bid package in response to a 60 million dollar plus proposal sponsored by a top 20, nationwide, construction company. Weber State University teams collaborated prior to the February event at the CM Challenge hosted by BYU. This past year, our Heavy-Civil Team and Design-Build Team placed 1st and Commercial took 3rd place for the region. Students who participate in the ASC Student Competition walk away with enhanced team building skills, understanding of the construction proposal process and networking opportunities with access to the largest construction career fair in the western United States. "Spencer’s courses are well prepared and not rush. His personality and humor really come through in his audio lectures. Even though we were not in a face to face course, I felt like I got to know him as a person. I know he really likes High C, he has young kids, and he likes to tell funny stories to keep you awake during the boring parts of the course. His videos are in short segments so that you can easily re-watch a section if you need to review something. He has an open classroom policy. If you are in his online session you can drop in on his face to face class for additional help. Even before Starfish, he would reach out and let you know if you were doing well or if you need it a nudge. Spring forward a few years and I still hear about Professor Hilton from students as we pick out courses for the next semester. His name always comes up at the end of the year the student surveys of professors who really made an impact on students."

A middle school team mentor by WSU Networking Instructor Matt Paulson wins 1st place in the state
A team of middle school students from Quest Academy Charter School in Ogden, UT recently concluded an exceptional round of competition in the twelfth season of CyberPatriot – the Air Force Association’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.
Established by AFA in 2009, CyberPatriot is designed to educate and motivate students toward careers in cybersecurity and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future.

"This segment explores how Davis Technical College and Weber State University are meeting the need for technicians skilled in the use of advanced composites. As Utah’s Aerospace, Medical, Outdoor Products and other industries which rely on composites grow, the prospects for students entering these in-demand careers look bright.

Ogden City, Weber Housing and Weber State team up to build 4 new homes
Professor of Building Design and Construction, Jeremy Farner will be leading this project.
OGDEN — Ogden City will team up with a pair of local partners to build a series of new homes in the east-central portion of the city.
WSU PREP is the recipient of the Exemplary Collaboration Award
The recipient of the Exemplary Collaboration Award is the WSU PREP Program. Members of this program include: Dana Dellinger, College of Engineering Applied Sciences and Technology, Yesenia Quintana, Center for Community Engaged Learning, and Jennifer Claesgens, College of Science. Congratulations to this team who work together throughout the year to coordinate and host summer programs that motivate and prepare high-achieving jr. high students for future schooling and careers in STEM fields.
Solar-powered Pavilion
The concept center was approached by the Sustainability Group led by Jennifer Bodine, requesting a solar charging station for students and faculty to use.
The basic requirements were that the tables are to be outside providing shelter from the elements and have a place where students can plug in and charge their electronic devices. The units must be completely self-contained and be able to be put at various places around campus. They are to be solar-powered, with battery storage and be lit up at night. With these solar pavilions students will have a well-illuminated area to study, hang out and be able to charge their electronic devices using the suns energy. In addition, the structures need to be very durable to take high winds and snow all while requiring very minimal maintenance year-round.
Outstanding Researcher Award
Congratulations to Computer Science Instructor Dr. Luke Fernandez and Dr. Susan Matt (WSU History professor) for wining the Weber State University: Outstanding Researcher Award.

Women Engineers: Be Your Own Feminine
Mary Foss, assistant professor in Engineering Technology, recently wrote an article that was published in the Society of Women Engineering website about how women engineers should set aside the pressure that they might feel to look and act a certain way so as to not upset the strong preconceived notions that surround people regarding women engineers.
Professional Sales Instructor Making a Difference
Professional Sales Instructor Alex Lawrence was asked to join and accepted a seat on the Board of Directors for the First Tee of Utah. It is a volunteer position for two years and it helps kids with no money and/or difficult home situations learn to play golf, get to play golf for free, provides equipment for them to use as well as golf lessons and mentoring.
They help a few hundred kids a year in Utah. The First Tee is a national organization as well; this is the Utah chapter. It is a very hands on program and really does help a lot of these kids learn some important things outside of hitting a golf ball. They do a lot to help the kids with their home life by involving their schooling and grades as part of the program in an effort to help them graduate from high school, and where warranted, helps them with college golf scholarships as well.
WSU Student received SME Education Foundation, including the SME Directors Scholarship
Greg Smith faced a decision. He was studying English at Utah Valley University but wasn’t enamored with the career options his potential degree provided. Greg had been studying welding, both technique and theory, for the previous 15 years. In high school he enrolled in as many welding classes he could handle.
Two years into his studies at Utah Valley University Greg decided to try something else. He turned to his passion for and experience with welding for a pathway. Greg spent the next seven years as the lead welding instructor at Mountainland Applied Technology College where he trained students in techniques for welding sheet metal, plates and pipes using the welding knowledge he had acquired previously.
WSU Student at the Utah NASA Space Grant Consortium
Recent graduate Shelby Chatlin (BSMET 2018) presented at the Utah NASA Space Grant Consortium in May 2019. Shelby discussed the engineering and manufacturing of the non-conductive mechanical drive system for the Antenna Pattern Measurement System being jointly developed by faculty members Christian Hearn (Electrical Engineering) and Dustin Birch (Mechanical Engineering).
Interior Design Study Abroad 2019
The Interior Design program recently returned from their study abroad adventure focusing on ancient-18th century architecture and interiors. The 42 participants had the good fortune to explore Italy (Venice, Rome, Pompeii); Croatia (Pula, Rovinj, Groznjan); Germany (Nuremberg, Regensburg and Schwangau); France (Colmar, Fountainbleau, Versailles and Paris). In addition to wearing out students with walking, we also participated in a dragon boat and regatta experience in the canals of Venice and a bike ride through the vineyards of Colmar. Some of the highlights were seeing the beautiful Colosseum in Pula, the Hall of Mirrors in Versaille and the Paris Opera House. We were there for the 130th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower and enjoyed the festivities that accompanied that celebration (and the somber site of Notre Dame). Many student attended an optional evening tour at the Nazi Rally Grounds in Germany and gained a better understanding of WWII's beginning.

Solar Decathlon 2020 - WSU is one of 11 schools in this competition.
Golden, Colorado - Congratulations to the Building Design and Construction senior project students for qualifying to compete at the Solar Decathlon Building Competition at the National Mall in Washington D.C. in 2020! The team has been awarded $25,000 by the US Department of Energy to continue with the project and got the approval to proceed to build a duplex in Salt Lake City.
Charitable Chair 2019
Friday night was the Interior Design Program's annual Charitable Chair event. Talented and dedicated students from the program professionally refinished chairs. The Charitable Chair event incorporates accreditation standards, design curriculum and public service.
As part of the course final project, students from five interior design courses participate by designing and enlisting the help of professionals to refurbish a chair of historical significance. Chairs are auctioned at a public event. Proceeds from this year's auction will be divided between Catholic Community Services-Bridging the Gap and the WSU Interior Design Program.
Design Build Day 2019
Over 400 students visited the WSU Davis campus for Build Design Day. The event included the announcement of the Utah Architecture, Engineering and Construction Pathway, mini house tours, workshops, interior design classes, excavator driving, booths, prizes, and a pizza buffet.
Professional Sales students to compete in Orlando, Florida for DECA competition.
Students at Weber State University did an exemplary job at the state DECA competition in February, 2019. Seventeen of the eighteen students placed in their competitive events and qualified for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) held in Orlando, Florida. This was a substantial growth from the seven students who placed at the state DECA competition the previous year.

Students build a portable radio station for Weber County Sheriff’s
Emergency Communication Team
Jerry Catrell from the Weber County Sheriff's Emergency Communications team discovered that handheld radios did not keep his team consistently in commuicaitons while riding inside improvised ambulances. Jerry met with Professor Kelly Harward who invited him to meet with his MFET 3460 Engineering Design class. This lead to students building protypes of specialized airtight and watertight containers to carry portable, powerful ham radio stations in. Students Alex Richins, Brand Foust, Michael Kidman, Jared Paskins, Riker Porter, Russell Schuh, Kaden Strate, Jake Wilson, and Daniel Wiseman came up with a winning design that when field tested was confirmed to be a perfect solution.

Top 5 Nationally ranked Interior Design Student
Interior Design student, Natalie Gneiting, ranked in the top five nationally in the FORM Student Innovation Competition by Formica Corporation. Her work will be displayed with fellow Interior Design student Mallory Bouchard’s in March 2019 at the competition exhibit in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Contemporary Arts Center.

Mallory Bouchard, a second year student, placed third in the FORM Student Innovation Competition by Formica Corporation. Her success in the competition earned her prize winnings. Not only did she receive a prize from the competition, but her work will be displayed in the Contemporary Arts Center located in Cincinnati, Ohio in March 2019.
