I embarked on a unique journey that led me to where I am today, and I owe much of my success to Weber State University’s outstanding microbiology program, its incredible professors, and a series of serendipitous encounters. My passion for science was ignited during high school, thanks to an inspiring biology teacher who planted the seeds of curiosity that would later flourish into a profound love for the subject.
After graduating high school, I returned to my home state of New Mexico and enrolled as an undeclared major at a local community college. As I completed my prerequisites, I discovered a genuine interest in science, prompting me to declare General Science as my major. I earned my associate’s degree in 2015, but the distance to the nearest university, which was three hours away, made continuing my education seem unlikely.
A turning point came when my husband received a job offer in the Salt Lake area, prompting us to relocate. Initially, I couldn't resume my studies, and as time went on, the prospect of returning to school seemed increasingly unlikely. However, a chance conversation at a family gathering changed everything. A cousin’s remark, “Well, time’s only going to continue to pass,” struck a chord with me. It was the push I needed to continue my education.
I began exploring universities and was captivated by the courses offered by Weber State’s Microbiology Department not to mention the price point. Soon, I was enrolled as a third-year student, eager to immerse myself in the world of microbiology. Despite the challenge of catching up with my peers, I relished every moment. My first class, Principles of Microbiology taught by Dr. Culumber, not only deepened my passion for the subject but also sparked a friendship that would later prove life-changing.
My academic focus was on pursuing a career in forensics, and I was fortunate to undertake a research project under the guidance of Dr. Domek. This invaluable experience bolstered my confidence in designing, executing, and presenting research. As my final year approached, I was encouraged by my professors to apply to the BUILD Dairy graduate program. Although graduate school was not initially part of my plan, attending the annual BUILD meeting convinced me that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I was thrilled to be offered a spot in the Food Science Department at Penn State.
After graduating from Weber, my husband and I relocated to Pennsylvania, where I completed my master’s thesis on the "Effects of Milk Protein Concentrate and Stabilizer Type on Shrinkage in Low Fat Ice Creams." Essentially, I earned a Master’s degree in Ice Cream! This opportunity in the BUILD Dairy program allowed me to connect with new colleagues, build on research skills, and maintain relationships with my mentors and peers from Weber.
The onset of COVID-19 during my final semester posed challenges in finding a job, prompting a temporary move to Texas to be closer to family. However, an unexpected message from my friend from Principles of Microbiology led to an exciting opportunity at Rogue Creamery in Oregon. Within two months, we relocated once more, and I am now the Quality Assurance Manager at Rogue Creamery.
Reflecting on my journey, I am immensely grateful for the people and opportunities that have steered me down the path that I am on. Weber State University played a pivotal role in my personal and professional development, and I am proud to be where I am today, thanks to the foundation it provided. Take full advantage of the opportunities and connections that Weber may lay in your path, I did, and it took me on an exciting ride!
