Adobe Creative Jams Session February 24

We want to know what has brought you JOY recently! Join other faculty on February 24, 12:30-2 p.m. to laugh and learn with your colleagues, while gaining a new skill in an Adobe Creative Jam Session. 

This Creative Jam Session will introduce faculty across all skill levels to Adobe Rush, an easy video-making program. You will learn to make videos like this one in which Stephanie shows us what has brought her joy recently.

 

 

Open Educational Resources and Affordable Course Materials Workshop

Media Literacy Librarian at Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library.

January 27 and 28th from 2-4 pm on both days.

Michael Whitchurch is the OER and Media Literacy Librarian at Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library.  He received his MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 1999 where his passion for the convergence of information and technology took root. His previous work experience includes being an Instruction Librarian and WebCT Administrator at the University of Utah, and the Information/Learning Commons Librarian, Virtual Services Librarian, and department chair for the Information, Media and Digital Services Department at Brigham Young University.

He currently leads the OER efforts at BYU in part by chairing the BYU Affordable Course Materials Working Group and the Library Scholarly Communications Committee. He also provides strategic guidance to the Software Training, Media Production, and Makerspace units of the library.

Since 2004 Michael has been involved in national organizations such as the Utah Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries, the Reference and User Services Association, the American Library Association and the Open Education Network. He holds a Creative Commons Certificate and is an instructor for the Open Education Network’s Certificate in OER Librarianship.

What the Hell Just Happened?:

Discussing the challenges we've faced and the opportunities we have as a result of the recent pandemic.

 "What the hell just happened?"  As a member of the WSU community, you are likely posing that very question to yourself and others as you think about the events of the last 8 months.  A move to virtual teaching. Zoom meaning more than just going fast in a car or the kid's show on PBS.  And screen sharing is not watching a movie together!  Seriously, what the hell just happened?  No doubt, you have experienced many challenges moving your courses and services to virtual formats.  So, what have we learned amidst all this chaos and confusion?  Do you have some ideas to share with your colleagues?  Would you like to hear what others have done to enhance their own virtual offerings? 

Join us on Friday the 13th (your lucky day) from 12:30 - 1:30 to discuss what the hell just happened.  We'll be sharing ideas in separate breakout rooms, each focused on one of the topics below:

  • What the hell just happened with my video?
  • What the hell just happened in my web conference?
  • How the hell do we help students stay engaged?
  • What the hell did the students say?

Each breakout room will have a facilitator and an instructional designer to oversee and facilitate your conversations.  All of the ideas generated during the event will be posted on the Teaching and Learning Forum website.  We hope to see you at the event.

 

Small Teaching Online with Flower Darby

Flower Darby celebrates and promotes excellent teaching for the sake of our students and their learning. She's the Director of Teaching for Student Success at Northern Arizona University, where she's taught for over 23 years in English, Educational Technology, Leadership, Dance and Pilates. Flower teaches face-to-face, blended and online classes at NAU, and she also teaches online classes at Estrella Mountain Community College. She loves to apply effective teaching principles and practices across the disciplines and to help others do the same. Flower speaks, writes, presents and consults on teaching and learning theory and practice both nationally and internationally. She's the author, with James M. Lang, of Small Teaching Online: Applying Learning Science in Online Classes (2019).
