Participation Requirements

The Smart Start Repayment Program is designed to help students that are experiencing a short-term or unexpected financial hardship.  The program allows students to continue their education as long as they are making positive academic and financial progress.  You may be eligible to participate if:

  • Enrollment in a new semester will not increase your unpaid financial balance,
  • You have pending or available financial resources for an upcoming semester,
  • You can establish a short-term repayment agreement with regularly scheduled installment payments. 

Benefits of the Smart Start Repayment Program

1.    Student will have the ability to register for an upcoming semester.
2.    Student’s unpaid semester balance will be brought current and returned to regular payment status with a reduction of interest and no additional fees.
3.    Credit Bureaus will be instructed to remove the account from the student’s credit history upon completion of the program.
4.    Student can request to have transcripts and/or diploma released:
       a.    If pending financial aid, scholarship or sponsorship payments are sufficient to cover outstanding balance(s), or;
       b.    If over fifty percent of the unpaid semester balance has been paid with on-time regular payments under this program.
5.    Utah State Tax Commission refunds will not be garnished to repay the debt.
