Lifeguard Training
Course Description:
The primary purpose of the courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:
- Prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.
- Provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
Participants are required to attend all course sessions and pass a written and skills test with at least 80% in order to pass. The minimum age for this class is 15 years old by the last day of class.
Pre-Requisites:
- 15 years of age before the last day of the class
- Must pass a pre-course evaluation with the following elements:
- Swim, Tread, Swim Sequence: Swim 150yds (front crawl or breaststroke) nonstop, tread water for 2 min using only legs, swim 50yds (front crawl or breaststroke).
- Timed Event: Swim 20 yards, retrieve 10 lb brick from 7-10ft deep, swim 20 yards with brick within 1 minute 40 seconds
Cancellation/Refund Policy:
Refunds are not provided for courses except in extenuating circumstances. If a participant cannot pass the prerequisite skills, a refund will be provided, minus a $10 fee.
Cost:
- $155 for WSU students/faculty/staff | $165 for community members
- Cost includes non-refundable $10 fee for pre-test
- Participants may purchase a CPR Mask for $15
