Scholarships Available For Emergency Support

""Raising Rio Emergency Student Support Gift Fund

  • Must show emergency financial need
  • Preference is given to single parents with dependent children who are engaged with the Office of Access & Diversity.

A cash award of up to $500 in emergency funds. The fund may be used for general purposes to help students facing a financial crisis beyond their control. Examples include but are not limited to student's transportation home to attend a parent's funeral; emergency medication; assisting a student in paying for a mammogram to establish a benchmark before starting chemotherapy; purchasing an automobile battery or similar so the student can make it to school; etc. The maximum amount any one student may receive from this fund in a given academic year shall be limited to $500.

This is an ongoing award based upon need.

""Warfield-Graham Emergency Student Support Fund

Byron Warfield-Graham was one of the organizing/charter members of the Black Student Union (BSU) at Weber State University in 1968-1969. Byron and his wife Audrey, have continued to support the Black Student Union aka Black Scholars United over the years. Their support includes a Byron Warfield-Graham Scholarship and this recently established (1/2019) Emergency Student Support Fund. The Emergency fund’s primary focus is to provide a helping hand for African American students during emergency situations that might interrupt their academic success.

This fund has been set up to provide up to $500 in emergency funds for students. The fund may be used for general purposes to help students facing a financial crisis beyond their control. Examples of fund use may include: providing a student's transportation home to attend a parent's funeral; helping a student pay for emergency medication; assisting a student in paying for a mammogram to establish a benchmark before starting chemotherapy; paying for the removal of an impacted wisdom tooth; helping with the cost of an automobile battery or similar so a student can make it to school; helping a student replace a stolen backpack with school supplies and calculator the week before finals, etc. Therefore the emergency fund does not cover the cost of tuition, books and rent. BSU will be involved in the administration of this fund.

""Black Scholars United Scholarship

The Black Scholars United Scholarship Fund is made possible from an endowment by Barbara C Tanner. The recipient must identify as Black and/or African American, have a 2.5 GPA, and be enrolled at WSU with 6-12+ credits each semester the award is given. Preference will be given to those students demonstrating the most financial need.

""The Sonora Grill Scholarship Endowment

The Sonora Grill Scholarship Endowment is established to promote college opportunities for students who do not qualify for FAFSA. The scholarship fund is intended to remove financial barriers for students who demonstrate the dreams, goals, and aspirations of attending Weber State University and becoming first generation college graduates.

Qualifications: Preferential consideration will be provided to students who meet the following criteria:

  • First-generation college students, low-income, and those not qualified for federal financial aid. 
  • Ogden, Weber, or Davis school district high school graduate who attended high school in Utah for three or more years.
  • Incoming freshman or undergraduate student at Weber State University.
  • Enrolled/plans to be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester.
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Applicants will need to submit an essay outlining their academic, professional, and personal goals along with an explanation of adversity, financial need, and the significance of receiving this scholarship.

""InFaith Community Foundation Scholarship

First preference is given to first-generation students of Hispanic or Portuguese descent; second preference given to Ogden School District high school graduates. Applicants will need to submit an essay outlining their academic, professional, & personal goals along with an explanation of adversity, financial need, and the significance of receiving this scholarship..

  • Must be from a low-income family and NOT eligible for any federal financial aid.
  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll full-time (12 credits and above/semester).
  • Must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, but preference is given to higher GPAs.
  • Incoming freshman or undergraduate student at Weber State University.

""Norman C. & Barbara L. Tanner Housing Scholarship

The Office of Access & Diversity offers a scholarship for on-campus housing and meal plans for new incoming or current undergraduate ethnic/racial minority students, based on financial and housing needs. The scholarship may cover the partial or full cost of housing (shared room) and a meal plan in either Wildcat Village or University Village for 2 semesters. Students must be enrolled or plan to be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours), and have a minimum 2.0 GPA to apply. Students receiving the award must maintain a 2.5 GPA. Single applicants must be willing to share a room. This is a one year. (2 semesters) scholarship and may be applied for annually.

""The Phyllis Heart Guerts Memorial Scholarship

Phyllis "Heart" Geurts left a legacy of love and kindness through her passion and commitment to serving her family, friends, and many others in her community. Phyllis was recognized by the nickname "Heart” throughout her life because of the way she treated and supported those that she loved and served. Similar to how the heart pumps blood, she pumped motivation and words of encouragement to all those who felt her constant impact. Like the oxygen provided by the heart, she supplied her family and others with a constant flow of devotion and support. She filtered out the adverse effects of life with her sacrifice and love. Giving a glimpse into what she cherished the most, she was a mother of 9 children, a grandmother of 25 grandchildren, and a great grandmother to 19 great grandchildren. "Giving" was her motto in life and a source of fulfillment in every action & contribution she made. This scholarship reflects "Heart's” dedication and desire to live life through the promise to serve others in hopes of creating a positive impact on the world.

Qualifications: Preferential consideration will be provided to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Low-income, and not FAFSA eligible and those not currently eligible for financial aid.
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Must qualify for in-state resident tuition. 
  • Preference will also be given to those individuals who participate in regular community involvement or volunteerism.
  • Applicants will need to submit an essay outlining their academic, professional, and personal goals along with an explanation of adversity, financial need, and the significance of receiving this scholarship.
