FIRST-YEAR SUMMIT
WHY HAVE A FIRST-YEAR SUMMIT?
The summit offers an opportunity to share information and discuss work being done on the retention of first-year students by colleges and departments, and divisional programs and resource offices.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE SUMMIT?
- Share data on the background and characteristics of WSU first-year students.
- Provide information about programs and resources for first-year students.
- Solicit feedback on first-year goals (momentum, belonging, and engagement).
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE SUMMIT?
23/24 dates are TBD. The 22/23 Summit took place on January 20, 2023 in the WSU Ballrooms.
WHO IS INVITED?
All staff, faculty, administrators, and students (leadership and employees) are invited to attend.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE SUMMIT?
The data on first-year student characteristics and details about first-year goals are available as modules on the Student Success Canvas Course. Senior leadership will also introduce the topics at the beginning of the Summit. Then, participants will be invited to discuss the data and goals at tables hosted by faculty and staff, offering various academic programs and student-support resources for first-year students.
WHAT WILL BE DISCUSSED?
The discussion at the Summit will focus on how to further promote first-year student success in achieving the goals of making progress towards completion (momentum), participation in co-curricular and high-impact experiences (engagement), and feelings of comfort and connection at the institution (belonging).
