WSU Hosts 2020 Commencement, Aug. 29
OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University will host its spring 2020 commencement ceremony Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. in Stewart Stadium.
The event will carefully follow health department recommendations for social distancing. In compliance with the state’s phased guidelines, everyone in attendance must bring and wear a face covering. Each graduate will be allowed one graduate ticket and up to four guest tickets. In order to have their names read, graduates should register for tickets by Aug 24. Guests can register for tickets until Aug. 26. Only those with tickets will be allowed in the stadium. To register for tickets, visit commencement at weberstatetickets.com.
WSU faculty and staff will be able to register for any remaining tickets beginning Aug. 27 at 10 a.m.
Ticket holders will be socially distanced into groups of two. Section G will be set aside for individuals at higher risk for COVID-19.
Graduates and their guests are encouraged to arrive early to allow time for parking and seating. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. Everyone should be in their places by 7:50 p.m. Graduates will be seated on the field and guests in the east and west stands.
For those who cannot attend, the program will be streamed live online.
"The graduating class of 2020 will always be remembered as those who had the determination to complete their college education during a time of historic tumult,” said WSU President Brad Mortensen. “I applaud their grit and tenacity and know they will use these strengths to continue to lead and succeed."
This year’s graduation speaker is Crystal Call Maggelet, CEO of FJ Management Inc. Maggelet is currently one of 18 people appointed by the governor to serve on the Utah Board of Higher Education.
Maggelet will be awarded an honorary degree along with James C. Hurst, who passed away in May 2020 after a lifetime as a university administrator and philanthropist; Joe McQueen, an Ogden Jazz legend, who died December 2019 at age 100; and Sam Zeveloff, WSU Presidential Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Zoology.
The 2020 Brady Distinguished Professors, history professor Sara Dant and zoology professor Christopher Hoagstrom, will also be honored during the program.
Business administration major Clarissa McEuen will represent graduates as this year’s student speaker.
In the 2019-20 academic year, which includes three semesters: summer, fall and spring, Weber State awarded 5,792 degrees. Of those, 2,930 were awarded degrees in spring 2020 and will be honored during the event. Because of this year’s delayed commencement, summer 2020 graduation applicants are also eligible to participate.
Graduates of the class of 2020 earned a combined 333 master’s degrees; 2,607 bachelor’s; 2,684 associate’s; and 168 certificates, including graduate certificates.
Of the graduates, 3,426 are females and 2,366 males.
