WSU Volunteers ‘Make a Difference’ in Local Community
OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to participate in service projects for the seventh annual WSU Makes a Difference Day, May 1 beginning at 8 a.m.
Sponsored by WSU’s Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL), WSU Makes a Difference Day brings together Wildcats to serve the local community. “Weber State embodies community as a core theme,” said Teresa Martinez, CCEL program coordinator. “Service opportunities such as these help WSU fulfill that mission, and allow us to be involved in the community.”
This year, service projects will support Habitat for Humanity. Participants will have their choice of volunteering at Habitat for Humanity’s home build in Ogden (450 15th St.), or at Habitat’s ReStore in Ogden (3111 Wall Ave.) or Layton (859 W. Hill Field Rd., Layton). Habitat for Humanity ReStores are home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home goods and building materials. Proceeds from the ReStores go to fund Habitat for Humanity projects.
Volunteers will meet at their project sites. Morning shift will run from 8 a.m.-noon, and afternoon shift will run from 1-4 p.m. CCEL will provide T-shirts for volunteers when they arrive at their project. Volunteers are asked to attend for at least two hours. Lunch will be provided at the project site for those leaving or arriving at noon.
Volunteers at the Ogden or Layton ReStore will assist with sorting, stocking and organizing donations. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and are encouraged to wear clothing they do not mind getting dirty.
Volunteers who assist with the home build will work on a house Habitat for Humanity is constructing in the local community. Participants should bring a water bottle, and are asked to wear closed-toe shoes, a hat, gloves and clothes they do not mind getting dirty.
CCEL has hosted WSU Makes a Difference Day for the past six years. Last year, 47 volunteers contributed 198 hours of service.
