Bossenberger, Dorsey Named 2010 Recipients of Lindquist Award
OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University dental hygiene professor Stephanie Bossenberger and geography professor Bryan Dorsey have been named the 2010 recipients of the John A. Lindquist Award.
The Lindquist Award, which was established in 2007, is given annually to faculty or staff members who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to mentoring WSU students in learning through community involvement.
For the past 10 years Bossenberger has worked closely with a number of community health organizations, including the Children’s Health Connection, inner-city Ogden elementary schools, Weber-Midtown Dental Clinic and the Women’s Health Connection. Through these organizations, she and her students provide screenings and education about dental health. Bossenberger’s students are required to participate in these outreach efforts as part of their community dental health course in their junior and senior years in the dental hygiene program.
As a member of the advisory board to the WSU Community Involvement Center, Dorsey has been a part of the service-learning movement at WSU since its outset. He has engaged his geography students in urban and city planning projects that include trail and open space planning as well as city planning for numerous cities in Weber and Davis counties. Dorsey’s urban planning courses were some of the first at WSU to be approved for the community-based learning designation.
A committee with representation from faculty, staff, trustees, community partners and students selected Bossenberger and Dorsey. They will be honored at a special awards luncheon on April 12 in Shepherd Union Ballroom B, which also will honor student volunteers.
This award is named for John A. Lindquist, a strong advocate for education and the community, who has spent a lifetime supporting Ogden, Weber County and Weber State. Lindquist’s ties to WSU date back to the late 1930s, when he attended Weber College and was a student body officer. Through the years, he has generously supported cultural, academic, athletic and student activities and programs at Weber State.
