WSU Moves Bill Nye Lecture to Dee Events Center to Accommodate Crowd

OGDEN, Utah – Due to overwhelmingly popular response, Weber State University has moved its April 3 moderated conversation with Bill Nye “The Science Guy” to the Dee Events Center April 3 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Tickets for the original 1,400-seat auditorium went on sale Feb. 27 and were sold out within 30 minutes, prompting a swift change of location in order to accommodate a larger number of students and community members.

Weber State students can pick up two free tickets at any Weber State ticket office from Feb. 27-March 13 with a valid Wildcard ID. A limited number of tickets are available to the community for $10 at weberstatetickets.com.

All seats are general admission, and no exchanges or refunds are available.

Nye’s appearance culminates this year’s Engaged Learning Series (ELS) around the theme “Matter of Fact?” ELS is a university-wide series of events designed to engage students, faculty, staff and community in discussion, debate, dialogue, learning and action around an issue of public concern.

The ELS focus on facts dovetails with Nye’s mission: “To help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work.”

Engaged Learning Series chair Teresa Martinez describes Nye as an iconic figure who connects with multiple generations. “He's relatable, entertaining but most importantly, talks about facts through science,” Martinez said. “WSU and the Center for Community Engaged Learning are excited that a speaker of his caliber would visit the Ogden area to engage the campus and community.”

Nye’s presentation will be a moderated discussion of why facts matter. Campus community members can submit questions via Twitter using #BillNyeWSU.

In addition to the Engaged Learning Series, the event is sponsored by a collaboration of Weber State groups including Student Involvement and Leadership, College of Science, College of Engineering, Applied Science & Technology, Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities, Provost’s Office, Friends of Stewart Library, Center for Community Engaged Learning, Office of the President and Ogden City.

College of Science Dean Andrea Easter-Pilcher said the enthusiasm for Nye’s visit reflects the genuine curiosity at Weber State to fully understand the world in order to make positive and lasting contributions.

“Weber State University empowers students by engaging them in the scientific process and in undergraduate inquiry-based teaching and research,” said Andrea Easter-Pilcher, College of Science dean. “When we empower students across the generations, we facilitate the long-term viability of earth, earth processes and all of the organisms we share our planet with. As Bill Nye says science is truly the “best idea we have ever had.”
