Weber State mourns the passing of Dean W. Hurst

OGDEN, Utah — Dean W. Hurst, one of the luminary figures in Weber State University history, passed away Jan. 14 at age 97.

A 1948 graduate of Weber College, Hurst returned to his alma mater in 1967 as the first executive director of Alumni Relations and the newly created college development fund.

Over the next 24 years, Hurst would play a key role in procuring funding for some of the most iconic structures on the Weber State campus, including the Stewart Bell Tower and Dee Events Center. He was affectionately nicknamed Mr. Weber State.

Hurst is also credited with creating Weber State’s beloved mascot, Waldo the Wildcat.

Hurst retired in 1991 as vice president of college relations. The Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning on the Ogden campus was named in his honor.

The Weber State community extends sympathy and gratitude to Hurst’s family for his lasting legacy and unwavering commitment to Weber State.

Funeral services will be held Feb. 3 at noon at the LDS Country Hills Ward building, 1401 Country Hills Drive, in Ogden. Friends may visit with family Feb. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Country Hills Ward and Feb. 3, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to Weber State University would be…Great! Great! Great!

Arrangements entrusted to Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden, UT.
