WSU Hosts MLK Week of Service

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University will host a week of service activities, Jan. 20-25, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students and community members will continue the legacy of King’s work through service projects and events that benefit Ogden and the surrounding area.

According to Diversity & Inclusive Programs coordinator Andrea Hernández, this year’s theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” is a call to action and an invitation to participate as a community – to be in solidarity regardless of background, creed or experience.

“This week is dedicated to honoring the great work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the community that supported him every step of the way,” Hernández said. “His words ignite a radiant fire within us to continue his work and remind us we are not alone in the battle for justice. We must come together as a community to form a unified voice.”

The week will begin with the annual MLK Freedom Breakfast and March on Jan. 20 from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.at the Marshall White Center (222 28th St. Ogden). Following the 8:30 a.m. breakfast and program, participants will march from the Marshall White Center to the Ogden Amphitheater.

Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in an activity following the freedom march. Volunteers will create artwork and discuss King’s vision with the Weber State NAACP and Black Scholars United. All events are free and open to the public.

The breakfast and march is sponsored by the NAACP Ogden branch, WSU Office of the President, WSU Access & Diversity, WSU Diversity & Inclusive Programs, WSUSA Diversity and Unity Board, and WSU Black Scholars United.
