Scholarships

The academy provides winners with grants of $5,000 (Gold), $3000 (Silver), and $2000 (Bronze) Medal Awards and a trip to Los Angeles for SAA Week.

Scholarships are awarded to help support students’ thesis film projects at the undergraduate and graduate level. Grant amounts generally range from $7,500 - $30,000.

This is a $10,000 grant to write, shoot and edit your film.

$10,000 annually, non-renewable.

$3,500 annually, renewable for one year. To automatically receive a renewal scholarship, the recipient must maintain a 'B' grade point average or higher and verify their grade point average by providing the foundation office with an official transcript by no later than June 30.

$5,000 annually, non-renewable. In addition to the cash prizes and scholarships, IPO Education Foundation reserves the right at its sole discretion to award each of the winners with a trip for two to the Foundation Awards Dinner. The trip consists of round-trip coach airfare from the major airport nearest each winner's residence, two-night hotel accommodations (double room), ground transportation, meals and other expenses.

The Betty Harlan Memorial Art Scholarship is to provide educational resources to students pursuing a degree in the visual arts. Eligibility: Graduating senior from a public or private high school who resides in Boone, Ogle, or Winnebago County, who plans to pursue a degree in visual arts, visual art education, or visual art history, has a minimum 2.75 GPA, and shows involvement in organizations and activities that focus on the visual arts.

The CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship was established in 2006 to provide financial assistance to African-American or Black students who are pursuing a degree in the visual arts. Visual arts include architecture, ceramics, drawing, fashion, graphic design, illustration, interior design, painting, photography, sketching, video production, etc. Selected applicants will be constituents of a CBC member’s district. Qualified applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited academic institution, and have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

The Francis D. Lyon Graduate Fellowship is awarded annually to a graduate student in the field of film making or a closely related field such as theatre/drama, writing or entertainment. Only graduate students are eligible to apply. Membership in Phi Delta Theta is not a requirement. The student is required to be enrolled in a college or university in the United States or Canada. Students of film making will be given first priority for the Lyon Fellowship. Other areas of consideration reflect on talent, academic excellence, and financial need. All applicants must submit a completed application, a work sample and a transcript (student copy will suffice).

The Sandy Schenker Capell scholarship was created to honor Sandy and her commitment to mentoring and developing young talent. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a Houston area high school senior interested in a career in media. The ideal candidate will represent the qualities that Sandy exuded in her daily life.

The Charles & Lucille King Family Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students studying television and film production. Awards are given to juniors and seniors who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, and professional potential. A maximum of $3,500 is available for each of the third and fourth academic years.

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation Scholarship for the Advancement of Women in Sports & Entertainment is intended for eligible college and graduate school women who desire to work and contribute their efforts within the field. The scholarship is granted to four applicants annually who are matriculating full-time in their sophomore, junior, senior or first year of graduate school. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required and applicants are required to be enrolled in one of the following majors in order to be eligible: Communication Studies, Marketing, Public Relations, Media Studies, or Journalism. Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States. Deadlines vary depending on which semester is being applied for.

Founded in memory of James Alan Cox, a television photojournalist, The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photojournalists aims to provide financial support to student photographers of high school and college age. The focus of work and entries is photojournalism. Various scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work "tells a story." This is a fairly broad topic and may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.) Jim Cox, who was a television photojournalist in Phoenix, always "told a story" through his work, whether it was in video or still photography.
