Weber State University Department of English Writing & Digital Media Contests


Each year, the Department of English hosts writing and digital media contests to recognize students with cash prizes and, in some cases, publication in English Department journals.

Creative Writing Submission Guidelines

Submissions to the creative writing contest must be

● 500 to 2000 words (for fiction and creative nonfiction)
● 12 pt. font
● Times New Roman or Garamond
● double-spaced (for fiction and creative nonfiction)
● in either PDF, Microsoft Word, or Open Office format.
● Poets may submit up to three poems
● Must put “English Department Writing Contest” in the subject line
● Entries are open to all English majors (including Metaphor staff)
● The contest will be judged by a panel of English professors

Awards

Cash prizes will be awarded to first ($250), second ($150), and third place ($100), in each category
(Poetry and Prose). The winning submissions in each category will also be published in the spring issue
of Metaphor. Finalists will also be considered for publication in Metaphor.

How to Submit

Email an electronic copy of the document to weberstatemetaphor@gmail.com with the subject line
“English Department Creative Writing Contest.”


PTW Submission Guidelines

PTW students can submit entries in two categories:

1. Digital Media PTW products, such as videos or social media posts/content related to PTW.
2. Traditional PTW products, such as reports, instructions, proposals, memos, etc.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($250), second ($150), and third ($100) place in each category.

Students may submit one product for each category. Email an electronic copy of submission(s) to
emilypetersen2@weber.edu.


Composition Submission Guidelines

Students may submit entries in two categories:

1. Research Paper: These papers should be double-spaced and in Times New Roman 12-point font and
no longer than 4,000 words in length.
2. Digital Documentaries: Digital documentaries should be submitted in a program from the Adobe Suite
and be three to five minutes in length.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($250), second ($150), and third ($100) place in each category.
Students may submit one product for each category. Email an electronic copy of submission(s) to
joseotero@weber.edu.


Literary Analysis Submission Guidelines

In this category, students can submit a literary analysis of any text - fiction, poetry, film, television, etc.
Submissions to this category must be:

● 2,000 to 4,000 words
● 12 pt. font
● Times New Roman or Garamond
● double-spaced
● in either .doc, .docx, or .pdf format
● Must put “English Department Writing Contest” in the subject line
● Entries are open to all English majors and English minors

Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($250), second ($150), and third ($100) place.
