Dental Hygiene Course Requirements

The following course information is applicable to the Dental Hygiene AS and BS degrees.

General Education 

The Department of Dental Hygiene upholds the University requirements for general education.

The following courses will meet some of your General Education requirements and serve as prerequisite courses to the Dental Hygiene program. These courses must be completed prior to starting the Dental Hygiene program.

Support Course Requirements

  • Communication: COMM 1020 or COMM 2110 (3 credits)
  • ENGL 1010 Introductory College Writing (3 credits)
  • ENGL 2010 Intermediate College Writing (3 credits)
  • Information Literacy: LIBS 1704, HTHS 2904 or WEB 1504 (1 credit)
  • Math QL Requirements (please meet with your academic advisor)
  • NUTR 1020 Science & Application of Human Nutrition (3 credits)
  • PSY 1010 Introductory Psychology (3 credits)
  • SOC 1010 Introduction to Sociology (3 credits)

Prerequisite Courses

The Department of Dental Hygiene requires the following prerequisite courses. All courses must be completed prior to starting the Dental Hygiene program. 

Some of these courses will overlap to meet your general education requirements. 

Science Course Requirements

  • HTHS 1110 Integrated Anatomy & Physiology I (4 credits)
  • HTHS 1111 Integrated Anatomy & Physiology II (4 credits)
  • HTHS 2230 Introduction to Pathophysiology (3 credits)
  • Additional 3 credit hours of Physical Science

OR

  • ZOOL 2100 Human Anatomy (4 credits)
  • ZOOL 2200 Human Physiology (4 credits)
  • HTHS 2230 Introduction to Pathophysiology (3 credits)
  • Chemistry: CHEM 1050 or CHEM 1110 (5 credits)
  • MICR 1113 Introductory Microbiology (3 credits)

Science course requirements must be taken within five (5) years of your anticipated program start date.

AS Course Requirements

Once accepted into the Dental Hygiene program, the following courses will be required to earn your Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene. These courses are also required to complete your Bachelor of Science. A vast majority of our WSU students who complete these classes go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene, which will expand your job and career opportunities.
