
Become an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer
OSHA authorizes trainers to conduct occupational safety and health training for the OSHA Outreach Training Program. Upon successful completion of the applicable OSHA trainer course, trainers are authorized, for a period of four years, to teach students 10-hour and 30-hour courses in construction or general industry safety and health hazards, or two-day courses for disaster site workers (second responders). Authorized trainers also receive federal OSHA course completion cards to distribute to their students.
To become an authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, a person must complete/meet the necessary prerequisite requirements and complete a required OSHA trainer course.
Construction Industry
Prerequisites:
- Prerequisite form documenting five years of construction-safety experience
- OSHA #510 Standards for Construction
Outreach Trainer Course:
- OSHA #500 Trainer Course for Construction
Update Course to Renew Authorization after 4 Years:
- OSHA #502 Update Class for Construction Outreach Trainers
Please note that if the trainer does not successfully complete the update class within 90 days of the expiration date, the trainer is no longer an authorized outreach trainer and must complete a trainer course (including meeting all prerequisite requirements) to become an authorized outreach trainer.
General Industry
Prerequisites:
- Prerequisite form documenting five years of general industry safety experience
- OSHA #511 Standards for General Industry
Outreach Trainer Course:
- OSHA #501 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for General Industry
Update Course to Renew Authorization:
- OSHA #503 Update Class for General Industry Outreach Trainers
Please note that if the trainer does not successfully complete the update class within 90 days of the expiration date, the trainer is no longer an authorized outreach trainer and must complete a trainer course (including meeting all prerequisite requirements) to become an authorized outreach trainer.
Maritime
Prerequisites:

- Have three years maritime industry experience, and
- Have two years of occupational safety and health experience (with a broad focus) in any industry, or a college degree in occupational safety and health from an accredited college or university, or certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Marine Chemist (CMC), or Certified Safety Health Manager (CSHM).
- Training. Complete OSHA course #5410, Occupational Safety & Health Standards for the Maritime Industry. This course covers Maritime standards and current industry information.
Outreach Trainer Course:
- OSHA course #5400, Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry
Update Course to Renew Authorization:
- Maritime outreach trainers are authorized for four years. Before the expiration of their authorization status, authorized trainers must take OSHA course #5402, Maritime Industry Trainer Update Course, to renew their authorization for another four years. If your card expires, you will have to retake Course #5400 to become reauthorized as a trainer.
Disaster Site
Prerequisites:
- OSHA #500 or OSHA #501 Outreach Trainer Course
- Prerequisite form documenting three years of safety training experience
- 40-hour HAZWOPER Course
Outreach Trainer Course:

Update Course to Renew Authorization:
