Master's Internship

The Weber State University Counseling & Psychological Services Center (CPSC) is pleased to accept applications for Master’s-level Interns on a rolling basis to fill positions as they are available. Start and end dates are negotiable, with a preference for work to be completed during the fall and spring semesters. Duties primarily include individual counseling, with additional opportunities for couples counseling, group counseling, outreach, and other developmental experiences as available and appropriate.

Weber State University (WSU) is a primarily undergraduate institution of approximately 30,000 students, with a substantial nontraditional population. The main campus of WSU is located in Ogden, Utah, approximately 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. Please visit the university website www.weber.edu for further campus information.

CPSC has a staff of ten mental health professionals and one part-time psychiatric nurse practitioner. Services are provided within a brief therapy model on both Ogden and Davis campuses (interns provide services on the Ogden campus only). Because WSU is an open-enrollment institution, our clientele tends to be more diverse than that of many university counseling centers. This provides a rich training environment.

Internship Information

1. Position responsibilities:
   • A commitment of at least two semesters, preferably in the fall and spring semesters. 
   • Provision of a minimum of 60% of scheduled time in direct service activities (therapy services, outreach, supervision)
   • Participation in one outreach presentation per semester to the WSU community
   • Provision of one case presentation per academic year to CPSC staff
   • Provision of one in-service presentation per academic year to CPSC staff
   • Active engagement in one hour of formal, individual supervision per week, provided by appropriately qualified mental health providers in accordance with program requirements
   • Interns are also strongly encouraged, but not required, to participate in CPSC’s weekly staff meeting on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 AM.
2. Interns will be required to furnish proof of their own professional liability policy.
3. Every therapy session must be recorded, utilizing the recording system provided by CPSC.
4. Adherence to ethical principles and standards of care, including guidelines related to record-keeping and treatment of minority populations.
5. Each position is a part-time position with the university and will be paid an hourly rate.
6. CPSC requires a formal affiliation agreement with each training program and each individual trainee. Those programs with which CPSC already has an affiliation agreement are listed on the individual internship pages. Please be aware that the affiliation process can take several weeks to accomplish.

Minimum Expectations:

1. Master’s student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or Marriage & Family Therapy Program. Preference will be given to students from accredited programs (e.g., CACREP, APA, COAMFTE).
2. Prior supervised clinical experience, including the provision of individual treatment, some of which must have served adult outpatient clients.
3. Must be registered in an appropriate internship course and have the approval of the associated coordinator at the respective university.

Discipline-Specific Information:

• Social Work Internship

  Our staff at CPSC includes two Licensed Clinical Social Workers, one of whom offers individual supervision to Social Work Interns. CPSC offers Social Work Interns the opportunity to provide individual and group therapy to WSU students. If appropriate and desired, Social Work Interns can also provide couples and family therapy services. CPSC routinely engages in outreach projects to the wider university community, offering Social Work Interns the opportunity to engage in macro-level interventions in addition to therapy services. Social Work Interns are invited to work with their supervisor to tailor their experience at CPSC to their needs and career goals.

  CPSC currently has affiliation agreements in place with Weber State University's Master of Social Work program.

• Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) Internship

  Our staff at CPSC includes two licensed Marriage and Family Therapists and offers both couples and family counseling to Weber State University students and their family members. On average, previous MFT Interns have spent 40% of their therapy time at CPSC providing couples and family therapy services. In addition, training at CPSC offers the opportunity to be supervised by an AAMFT-approved supervisor. Our MFT supervisors will work with interns to help ensure that outreach projects and other time spent at CPSC are tailored to the individual interests of our MFT interns.

• Clinical Mental Health Counselor Internship

  CMHC Interns at CPSC have the opportunity to learn from supervisors from multiple disciplines. Interns provide individual and group therapy services to WSU students, and when appropriate and desired can offer couples and family services as well. CPSC also encourages the development of outreach and presentation skills. Supervisors will work with interns to tailor the learning experience to their individual needs and career goals.

  CPSC currently has an affiliation agreement in place with Westminster College

• Bio:

  Juancarlos Santisteban has been practicing as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 2007. He started his formal training as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidate in 2017. Juancarlos received his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacific Lutheran University in 2009 and a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies from Weber State University in 2006.  He works with a range of mental health difficulties including trauma recovery, marital discord, depression, anxiety, PTSD, life transitions, sexual and physical abuse, and addictions. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and works from a systemic/relational approach. He incorporates elements of narrative therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, and has training in various evidence-based practices.

   

Kate Lovatt, LCSW

• Bio:

  I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have been working as a therapist with adolescents, adults, parents, and families since 2003. I have worked in foster care, community mental health, home-based therapy, public schools, and private residential treatment settings. I have supervised graduate master’s level clinicians while they pursued their licensure, as well as students in their practicum internships while they pursued their master’s degree. I strive to create a supportive professional relationship with my supervisees, in which we collaborate and problem-solve together. I recognize internships as a vital part of preparing an individual for working in this field and challenge that individual to maximize that learning opportunity.

  My therapeutic style is eclectic, but I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Exposure Therapy, and trauma-informed and humanistic perspectives. I am well versed in working with individuals with concerns about anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, autism spectrum disorder, grief and loss, and relationship issues.

  I have practiced in a few different, culturally diverse regions of the United States- originally from rural western Michigan, completed undergraduate and graduate studies in the Midwest, worked in the urban Chicago area, the Hawaiian islands, and then relocated to the mountain west, where I’ve called Utah home for the past 10 years.

• Bio:
  April graduated from USU in 2010 with a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and has been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 2013.  She completed supervisor training to be a Utah supervisor in 2022 and has been supervising students and provisionally licensed clinicians.  April works with a wide range of populations and clinical concerns and has a passion for work with the LGBTQ community.  She is also proficient working with issues of depression, anxiety, relationship distress, trauma, addictions, and life transitions.  April uses a systemic/relationship lens and works from models to include CBT, ACT, solution-focused, and narrative. 

Eddie Baxter, LCSW

• Bio:

  Eddie graduated from Boise State University in 2019 with a Master's Degree in Social Work and has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2021. Eddie is dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships, both with his clients and supervisees. Guiding emerging social workers and therapists, his approach blends evidence-based interventions with a compassionate, client-centered focus. He prioritizes relational dynamics in supervision, creating a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
  In both clinical practice and supervision, Eddie integrates mindfulness and self-compassion, recognizing their transformative power in enhancing personal and professional growth. His commitment extends beyond supervision to an active clinical practice here at WSU, allowing him to stay attuned to evolving client needs. He is passionate about social justice and contributes to initiatives promoting equitable access to mental health services.
