Our program supports the Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES). WSU provides continued education and sponsorship opportunities to AYES students who choose to become college students.

What degrees are available?

There are six Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Automotive Service Technology degree options and one certificate program option to help you become a professional automobile service technician:  

NEW There are three Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Automotive Technology options to help you prepare for other careers in the automotive industry. 

What are the employment opportunities?

Associate's degree graduates are qualified for a variety of entry-level service technician positions in dealerships, independent garages and other automotive service suppliers.

Bachelor's degree graduates are qualified for positions involving customer service, field engineering, field service testing, and technical instruction. Graduates work for companies such as Ford, General Motors, Honda, Chrysler, Toyota, MHC Kenworth, Manheim Corporation, and Sterling Collision Centers, as well as independent shops, Insurance companies, schools, and automotive aftermarket supply companies.

Starting Salaries
Starting salaries vary depending on the region, workplace and skill level.  Associate's degree graduates can expect starting salaries ranging from $25,000-$35,000 per year, while Bachelor degree graduates typically start at $40,000 or more per year.  For more information, go to

Is there an application deadline?

No, however, we encourage you to apply online  early.  Financial aid and scholarship applications do have deadlines.  See the financial aid and scholarship websites for more information.

The curriculum for each of our seven programs requires that specific classes be taken each semester.  Program schedules are now available for download.

Approximate Expenses 2009-2010

Out-of-state (Non-Resident) students now receive special discounted flat rate tuition, which is substantially lower than standard non-resident tuition.  Students can obtain Utah residency status after living in Utah for one year.  To receive the Discount, you must declare your major as "Automotive Service Technology" or "Automotive Technology".

November 4, 2009 - The WSU collision repair program has won a $5000.00 grant through I-Car and 3m corp.


   

November 2, 2009 - Congratulations to Jerry Page, Isaac Moon, Wally Capati, and Tim Hawes for being awarded the Toyota Scholars Program Scholarship for 2009-2010.  Each student receives a $3000.00 scholarship to be used towards their Bachelor of Science Degree. Thank you to Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Torrance, CA. for your generous support of our program.

 

October 23, 2009 - Congratulations to Launce Bennett of Tony Divino Toyota and Jared Crow of Larry H. Miller Toyota for being awarded the Toyota Dealers Scholarship for 2009-2010.  Each student receives a $6000.00 scholarship to be used towards their Toyota T-TEN AAS Degree. Thank you to the Denver Region Toyota Dealer Advertising Group for your generous support of our program.

October 16, 2009 - Thank you to the Denver Region Toyota Dealers Association for donating $21,000.00 to the Toyota T-TEN program at WSU.  The money was used for T-TEN student scholarships and two new Toyota TechStream diagnostic scan tools.

What will I learn in the program?

In the Associate of Applied Science program , you will prepare for a career as a automobile service technician by learning how a vehicle operates, how to diagnose problems with vehicles, and how to correct the problems you have diagnosed.  You will do this using the latest diagnostic tools, vehicles, and service information available directly from the different vehicle manufacturers we are partnered with.

The Bachelor of Science degree program builds on the AAS degree program by preparing graduates for employment in a wide variety of automotive industries including service operations, fleet management, and technical support activities.  As a graduate of this program, you will have developed technical competence and strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively, solve problems, and work in teams.

What courses are offered through online learning?

NEW - Much of the new curriculum for the B.S. degree is available online (depending upon your degree option).  Click here for more information.  If you are an "online only student", you can receive a reduced tuition rate that is the same tuition rate as in-state tuition regardless of your state or country.  To receive the reduced online student only tuition rate, call 801-626-660 and ask for the non-resident online student tuition rate.

Boy Scout Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge

NEW - The automotive department at WSU is available to help Boy Scout groups complete the Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge.  Call 801-626-7183 to setup a session.

Utah Highway Patrol Safety Inspection Certification

The fee for the class is $100 and is payable at the time of registration.  All classes held in the Technical Education Building, Room 219.  To register, contact the Continuing Education Registration Office at (801) 626-6600 or (800) 848-7770.  For information regarding the classes, call Maureen at (801) 626-6067.
