Appointments & Sessions
We do have a sign-up sheet on which a limited number of students can plan ahead and sign up in advance, especially during certain times of the semester where more students will be seeking our services, such as midterms and finals week. We will do everything we can to accommodate you, but please don't leave assignments for the last minute!
Other Information
Students come to the Writing Center seeking consultation with grammar, organization, thesis statements, citations, and various other writing-related concerns. A Writing Center tutor will sit with you and address your concerns for any writing piece, whether a research essay, job application, or graduate school essay.
The Writing Center tutors are students from our very own university. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and majors, from technical writing to nursing.
No. Because our focus is to support students in improving their writing skills, our practice is to meet with students one-on-one either face-to-face or online. The revising process is the best way to learn, and we encourage students to be fully engaged in it.
No, we are a drop-in service, so please come on in and put your name on the list to be next in line.
Your sign-up spot will be held for approximately five minutes before being given to a waiting student. If you need to cancel, please call our center at 801-626-7941, or simply come in.
Each session can run up to approximately 30 minutes. Depending on the availability of tutors and the the number of students signed up for that day, sessions may go longer if needed. However, if you find that you need more time, we encourage you to return!
Please bring a printed copy of your writing, any materials or guidelines, and questions or concerns on your writing and/or the requirements.
You and the tutor sit together at one of our tables with a printed copy of your writing assignment. The tutor will ask if he or she may read your paper softly out loud in order for you both to read along together. We hope you will feel comfortable telling the tutor what you would like to work on with the writing, such as grammar, thesis statement, organization, or citations. Be sure to ask questions as you go along!
In the DELC, you can use the dictionaries, grammar books, MLA and APA formatting guides, and computers.
