WSU Hosts Ogden City Candidates Panel

OGDEN, Utah – Citizens will have the chance to hear and question candidates at the Ogden City Municipal Election Candidate Panel Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Hurst Center Dumke Legacy Hall at Weber State University.

The panel will inform voters about the important challenges facing Ogden City. Each candidate will respond to questions covering a wide range of issues from the importance of outdoor recreation, to the Ogden City economy, to improving relations between the public and police.

Panelists will include Ogden City mayoral candidates Sebastian Benitez and Mike Caldwell; council candidates Richard Hyer, Municipal Ward 2, and Luis Lopez, Council at Large Seat C.  Lopez’s opponent, John Ogden, declined an invitation to participate.

Abigail Payne, editor in chief of the student-run newspaper, The Signpost, will moderate the discussion.

“We want to get the students of Weber State and the surrounding community informed and engaged in politics,” said Mike Moklebust, the student organizer and member of the student board for the Olene S. Walker Institute of Politics & Public Service. “This event is a great place to get to know who our future local government leaders are and to help us make an informed vote this election cycle.”

Student members of  Weber State’s Democratic Engagement Team want to ensure Ogden residents have the chance to see and hear how candidates plan to confront the challenges facing the city. Candidates also will be asked about how they plan to enhance economic growth and community vitality.

“It is important for the university to provide a place where candidates can debate and citizens can discuss the issues that matter in the public realm,” said Carol McNamara, Walker Institute director. “We hope panel discussions such as this will inform voters and inspire them to fill out the vote-by-mail ballots for this municipal election cycle.”

The panel is cohosted by the Democratic Engagement Team and the Walker Institute.  The event is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
