WSU Celebrates National Constitution Day, National Voter Registration Day

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University will host a week of events in observance of National Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 17-25.

Held annually on Sept. 17, Constitution Day celebrates the final signatures to the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia in 1787.

WSU’s American Democracy Project (ADP) will host an information booth, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Shepherd Union Atrium to help educate students about the power of the U.S. Constitution, which defines the freedoms and liberties of citizens.

“We sometimes forget what the Constitution contains and the role it plays in allowing our voices to be heard,” said Teresa Martinez, Center for Community Engaged Learning program coordinator. “We hope students will take the time to stop by and explore what there is to learn about this important document.”

The ADP has helped WSU students learn and understand the Constitution for 17 years.

National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 24, is another opportunity for students to honor the Constitution and American democracy. The ADP, in collaboration with the WSU Student Association Service Team's Weber County Elections chair, will help and encourage all eligible students to register to vote Sept. 23-26 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Atrium.

“WSU has the responsibility to ensure our students are engaged citizens regardless of status, political affiliation or ideology,” Martinez said. “We value student voices and want to ensure students feel empowered to exercise this right.”

The celebrations will culminate with a debate on the Electoral College, featuring political science professors Leah Murray and Thom Kuehls. All are welcome to attend, Sept. 25 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Lindquist Hall Barlow Lecture Hall Room 101.
