WSU Strengthens Community Ties with Service, Leadership

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University Service Day of Remembrance will be held Sept. 16 for all students, community members, faculty and staff to serve the community in honor of someone who has passed away.

Sponsored by the Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL), events begin in the Shepherd Union Lair at 8 a.m. with a light breakfast and free T-shirts for the first 75 people. Participants will then choose one of three projects.

Christmas Box House: 9 a.m.-noon

Twenty to 40 volunteers are needed to spruce up the Christmas Box House yard and garden (950 12th St. Ogden). Volunteers are encouraged to bring yard tools.

Lantern House: 1-4 p.m.

Volunteers will assist with some “much-needed” indoor cleaning at the Lantern House (137 W. Binford St., Ogden). Bring a mop if available.

Ogden Nature Center: 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (various shifts throughout the day)

Volunteer alongside the DaVinci Academy senior class. Projects will include weeding and trail maintenance at the Ogden Nature Center (966 W. 12th St, Ogden).

“This is the fourth year WSU Service Day of Remembrance has partnered with United Way’s Day of Caring,” explained Jenny Frame, coordinator. “We appreciate the partnership and support from United Way as we honor those who committed their lives to community engagement. We hope WSU faculty, staff and students will be compelled to join us as we serve to strengthen our community.”

Presidential Appointment

Weber State’s commitment to community engagement has been strengthened with the recent appointment of Brenda Marsteller Kowalewski as the presidential chair for community engagement. She assumes the new position in addition to her responsibility as CCEL director.

“No one has been better than Brenda at rallying faculty, staff and students around one of Weber State’s core themes: community,” WSU President Charles A. Wight said. “Her appointment as presidential chair for community engagement is an important recognition of her success, and it provides additional resources that will enable her to continue her important work.”

Under her leadership, the center has expanded and now engages 25-30 percent of Weber State’s 26,000 students. In the 2014-15 academic year, 6,554 students contributed 163,060 hours of community service.
