Not Your Typical Orientation for New WSU Students

Ogden, Utah – Classes, schedules, studying and stress are part of the university experience, but Weber State University faculty and staff are offering new students a chance to celebrate before hitting the books this fall with an overnight camp and a back-to-school party.

New and transfer students are invited to attend the “Experience Weber” overnight adventure at Causey Reservoir on Aug. 27 and the “Late Night at Weber” party on Aug. 28. The camp, hosted by WSU’s Outdoor Program, is intended to help students meet new friends, see what the mountains of Utah have to offer, get to know student ambassadors and ultimately experience Weber State to the fullest. The trip includes paddle boarding, kayaking and meals, along with the overnight stay.

“Some of the students are coming from a distance where they’re not familiar with Utah, and they’ll get to experience some of the cool things we have right here in our backyard,” said Daniel Turner, WSU program coordinator.

Turner has observed that students who attend these activities open up about their worries and concerns regarding college in a relaxed atmosphere. Staff and faculty are able to respond and help them connect with the appropriate individuals and departments on campus.

Late Night at Weber, hosted by WSU Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL) and the Latter-day Saint Student Association, will take place Aug. 28 from 7-11 p.m. The evening will start with a welcome from WSUSA president Cash Knight, an appearance by  the WSU mascot, Waldo, and the WSU Spirit Squad, followed by numerous games and activities.

“I think the Late Night at Weber activity really helps students see that the college atmosphere doesn’t have to be stressful all the time,” said Emma Clark, SIL coordinator. Activities include dancing, giant games, mini golf and giant Jenga. Drinks and snacks will be provided along with many prizes and giveaways.

At last year’s event, WSU President Charles A. Wight participated in the popular 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge with students cheering him on.
