WSU Volunteers to ‘Make a Difference’ in Ogden

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University students, alumni, faculty and staff will join the community in sprucing up their surroundings for the sixth annual WSU Makes a Difference in Ogden Day, May 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Volunteers will meet at the Stewart Bell Tower Plaza at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast and instructions about their projects, which this year include the Discovery Loop Trail (east of Stewart Stadium at approximately 3750 Skyline Drive) and the WSU Community Garden (behind Wildcat Village, 1375 Village Loop Road).

After breakfast, teams will head to their project sites for the first shift, 8:30 a.m.-noon. Lunch will be provided at the service site, and the second shift will begin at 1 p.m. and end around 4 p.m.

Those who choose to work on the Discovery Loop Trail will clip branches, clear overgrown brush blocking the trail, block paths that lead off the Discovery Loop and provide other trail maintenance. This project will involve moderate hiking to get to the trail.

Service at the WSU Community Garden will include raking, pulling weeds and preparing plots for the year’s gardening. This project is accessible to those who are unable or choose not to hike.

Volunteers should bring their own gloves and tools if they can, but some will be available. Participants should also dress in clothing that can get dirty, wear closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle; water stations will be available to refill water bottles.

“In addition to providing service, this is an opportunity for individuals from the campus and Ogden communities to come together and serve,” said Teresa Martinez, program coordinator for WSU’s Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL). “This is a chance for us to feel connected and give back to that greater community.”

WSU Makes a Difference in Ogden Day is a partnership among WSU Campus Recreation, the College of Science, WSU Environmental Ambassadors and Ogden City. CCEL has hosted this event in conjunction with Ogden City’s Make a Difference Day for the past five years. In 2017, WSU volunteers donated 220 hours of service.

WSU Makes a Difference in Ogden Day is family friendly, and all community members are invited to participate.
